The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) for advancing teaching excellence and student success.
The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond: and, actively promote equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services.
Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to enhance their teaching (inside and outside the classroom, in traditional as well as in digital teaching and learning settings); support undergraduate and graduate students to advance their success at UC San Diego and beyond; support graduate students to develop their professional development as instructors; and actively promote equity and inclusion within its organization and through its programs and services.
The Commons’ Education Research and Assessment Hub provides leadership, guidance, and resources to help department, faculty and staff conduct solid educational research to identify opportunities and address challenges from an evolving higher education landscape and promotes a culture of assessment and support the university’s continuous educational improvement efforts. Our goals are to (1) improve the learning outcomes and learning environments for online and traditional learners, (2) help better identify students in need of support, (3) tailor learning experiences, and (4) measure the results of interventions and ongoing improvement efforts.
The Director of the Education Research and Assessment Hub is responsible for: the management and administration of educational research and assessment activities for the Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons); providing guidance and consultation for departments and faculty members to assess and understand student learning; initiating and collaborating in research that gauges the impact of university educational initiatives to inform programming decisions, and providing evidence about how to enhance learning and student academic success; guiding educational data mining and learning analytics to extract meaningful and actionable insights from complex multi-modal data sets about learners and their contexts.
The Director of Education Research and Assessment will play a key role collaborating with campus leadership, faculty, Senior Commons Leaders in identifying needs through analysis if complex data sets, build working theories for improvement in student learning and academic success, and developing data-driven interventions.
Advanced skills associated with statistical analysis, database management and systems programming. Proficiency with SQL and other relational databases, and familiarity with student data terminologies.
Experienced with quantitative data analysis software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA, R, etc.), Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau or COGNOS), and QDA software.
In-depth knowledge of research function. Advanced statistical and quantitative and qualitative analytical skills (multivariate analysis, evaluation of educational programs and survey research) in higher education.
Proven knowledge of educational measurement, hierarchical linear modeling; and data presentation and reporting.
Demonstrated knowledge of assessment methods and instructional delivery activities in a university setting.
Knowledge of and experience with theory and practical applications of academic assessment planning and methods, including experience in measurement and/or psychometrics.
Expertise in designing and implementing assessment policies, processes and structures for academic program assessment.
Advanced research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. Ability in developing and implementing education assessment programs.
Strong knowledge of relevant social science, cognitive science and learning science statistical methods.
Knowledge of Institutional Review Board regulations and experience in IRB applications.
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize research, determine methods and approaches.
Bachelor's Degree in a related area with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions relative to research.
