DESCRIPTION

Under general direction, serve as Principal Investigator's senior assistant responsible for all aspects of electronic engineering tasks, including planning, organization, and supervision in a large research program in acoustical oceanography and ocean acoustics. Plan, organize, supervise, and perform all electronic engineering functions required by the program. Design, document, and test ultra-low-power, microprocessor-controlled oceanographic instrumentation. Supervise the construction, assembly, and testing of electronic assemblies Perform the recording and reduction of electronic test data for instrument design and evaluation. Assemble and evaluate information on electronic and computer equipment considered for purchase. Participate in at-sea testing and deployment of completed instruments.

  • Must be willing and able to go to sea for research cruises in remote locations of up to six weeks duration.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.

  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Ability to use a variety of electronic test instruments to test computer, logic, and analog circuits.

  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.

  • Knowledge of computer and logic circuit design, including microprocessor design, such as would be typical of an electronic engineer.

  • Experience with launch and recovery techniques at sea.

  • Knowledge of electronic fabrication techniques.

  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.

  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to lead and influence others.
