Perform skilled journey level work independently or as part of regular maintenance crew. May be assigned duties in one or more of the building trades including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, locks, e-locks, HVAC, and boiler and steam generator systems. Instruct unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.

Assigned to cover campus Housing and Dining Services facilities performing maintenance work dispatched by Customer Service Center dispatcher, maintenance superintendent or campus police. Provides a high level of customer service to customers. Works as a team in conjunction with other divisions withing Housing, Dining, Hospitality and other campus departments.

Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 7 divisions, with approximately 700 career employees, 1000 to 1200 student employees and an annual operating budget of greater than $170 million. HDH provides housing for approximately 15,000 undergraduates, grad students, faculty, staff and their families in over 400 buildings covering approximately 6 million sq. ft. HDH is in the midst of implementing an aggressive building plan which will add 5000 new beds and almost double our square footage by 2021.

Currently, HDH houses 38% of UCSD’s enrolled students with a goal of housing 50% in the near future. HDH provides maintenance and repair, contract meals/meal plan management, as well as retail food service, conference services and catering services to residents, students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

  • Required to work scheduled shifts, including nights and weekends – may need to work five 8-hour or four 10-hour shifts, including day shift, evening shift and night shift. Proper notice will be given.

  • Required to work overtime as needed.

  • Able to carry tools and walk to various locations.

  • Journey level skill in one or more of the following trades: plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, boiler and steam systems and HVAC.

  • Knowledge and skill to use tools for installing and repairing plumbing systems, electrical systems, refrigeration, HVAC, sheet metal and power tools for carpentry.

  • Knowledge of types of pipe and tubing for water, steam and gas systems and refrigeration.

  • Knowledge and skill to make temporary and permanent repairs to doors and associated hardware.

  • Knowledge of hermetic and semi-hermetic type compressors and chillers.

  • Ability to identify and use different types of refrigerant.

  • Knowledge and skill to use all types of meters.

  • Knowledge of the operation and construction of drain clearing equipment.

  • Knowledge and skill to operate electric arc-welder, tig-welder and gas welding equipment.

  • Ability and skill to use all tools appropriate for mechanical and electrical maintenance.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to follow all safety precautions in methods and use of equipment. Ability to safeguard areas and keys as assigned.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of many diverse backgrounds, including students, staff, faculty, and guests.

  • Must have the ability to function effectively as a team member, including working cooperatively and positively with co-workers to achieve unit and area goals.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, including greeting the customers, completing work in a professional, cooperative manner, providing a solution or an estimated time when you can get back to them, and following up till the job is completed.


  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • A valid CA driver's license required and must maintain good driving record and participate in the DMV Pull program.

  • Must become certified at the Universal level to handle refrigerant within six (6) months of hire.
