The incumbent will apply advanced systems and software integration concepts, and location or institutional objectives, to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of systems and software requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors to resolve and implement medium to large projects of broad scope and complexity. S/he will regularly resolve highly complex business processes, system functionality, implementation issues and system and software integration issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors by selecting the right tools, methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Additionally, the incumbent will give technical presentations to associated teams, other technical units and management, evaluate new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost/ benefit analyses, and may lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.
Specifically, the incumbent will provide project support for HPC resources at SDSC such as the Triton Shared Computing Cluster (TSCC) a scientific research cluster build on the condo computing model, Comet HPC machine a resource for XSEDE users located at various institutions, Gordon HPC resource managed for the Simons Foundation. S/he will need to effectively communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences. The TSCC presently consists of a mixture of approximately 250 general computing and GPGPU nodes and is designed to grow as more researchers participate. In this capacity, the incumbent will interact with condo owners to provide access to the computational resources and software required for their research, develop policies to ensure reliable and efficient cluster operation, and work with the HPC systems staff to manage TSCC operations and user interactions.
The incumbent will work extensively with members of the SDSC HPC systems group to coordinate operations between the TSCC and SDSC national and other clusters. In order to be successful with these responsibilities, the incumbent will need to be self-motivated and able to work both independently as well as part of a team. The position involves researching existing cluster operation, monitoring, and reporting tools as well as designing, implementing, and documenting new ones. TSCC and other cluster operation relies on the Rocks cluster management system and the position requires detailed knowledge of the Rocks or similar cluster management tools. Additionally, experience in developing and building Rocks rolls to package new application software for cluster deployment would be highly preferred.
Advanced Knowledge of HPC and Cyber Infrastructure.
Advanced knowledge of systems integration deploying complex systems integration solutions. Advanced skills associated with system integration design, modification, implementation and deployment in a complex environment.
Highly advanced skills, and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation and deployment of HPC / data science applications and tools of large-scale scope.
Advanced knowledge of deployment and configuration of cluster management software, such as PBS/Torque, Maui, Slurm, and Rocks.
In depth experience in cluster management tasks, including deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of computational and management nodes, network switches, and NFS file servers.
