DESCRIPTION

This position is the primary subject matter expert in the Weather Research for Forecasting Model (WRF model) and West-WRF (Western region specific WRF model) for the CW3E Center. Responsible for providing leadership to and coordinating the efforts of a diverse group of internal CW3E and external West-WRF researchers engaged in activities which utilize or extend West-WRF modeling concepts and techniques. Provides tracking of West-WRF efforts, collects data from disparate sources and efforts and provides analysis of data and results.

Provides guidance to CW3E and others in the community in the use and extension of West-WRF modeling. Writes/co-authors reports for internal CW3E use and and articles for publications. Participates in development of proposals to use/extend West-WRF modeling capabilities. Act as internal consultant to CW3E Executive Management team on resource requirements for West-WRF usage and extension, including but not limited to computing resources (hardware, software and services) and people/staffing resources.

Applies extensive knowledge as a research professional with an in-depth understanding of statistical and / or other analysis techniques designed to support research projects of broad scope and complexity. May function as a team lead.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • In-depth knowledge of research function. Scientific management experience.

  • Strong demonstrated experience in model development and systematic evaluation and improvement of models.

  • Advanced skills in analysis and consultation. Specifically in data and model analysis.

  • Proven in-depth experience with WRF and West-WRF modeling. Ability to serve as subject matter expert to a diverse research community.

  • Strong knowledge of HPC and how principles apply to West-WRF modeling.

  • In-depth understanding of key processes: cloud microphysics, convection, orographic processes, surface fluxes, etc.

  • Advanced research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.

  • Advanced skills associated with statistical analysis, database management and systems programming. With emphasis on statistical analysis.

  • Ability to consolidate and check accuracy of information from multiple team members, to write comprehensive progress reports, develop presentations and scientific research articles, write grant proposals, and develop other required documents as needed.

  • Proficiency to speak and write about scientific research persuasively and creatively and to express complex or technical content in understandable terms.

  • Demonstrated experience in verbal communication and presentation to large and/or diverse groups.
