The Applications Programmer 2 will be working on the analysis and visualization of Global Positioning System time data for research into crustal deformation and earthquake hazards for the U.S. West Coast. The Applications Programmer 2 will write application software relevant to this project to produce station velocity and crustal strain maps, grids, movies and a user interface for making these products publicly available. These products require someone with experience in Python and C/C++ programming languages using development environments such as Arduino Software (IDE), designing web interfaces (JavaScript, html), mapping applications such as Google Earth, Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Leaflet and Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) and data and metadata collection tools.

Applies professional programming concepts for small to medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects.


  • Thorough knowledge of secure software development.

  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, modifying and evaluating software.

  • Experience performing post processing of data consisting of writing custom code or using existing software packages to evaluate both data quality and interpret the ability of the system to obtain the correct scientific information when compared with other techniques.

  • Experience with common programming tools.

  • Knowledge of other IT related areas.

  • Proven software repository skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • C++ and python programming

  • System integration of power supplies, batteries, embedded computers, and cameras

  • Mapping applications such as Google Earth, Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Leaflet and Generic Mapping Tools (GMT

  • Collecting, gridding, and imaging data and data products

  • Familiarity with data science concepts and metadata
