Under supervision, operates and maintains scientific and supporting ancillary shipboard instrumentation aboard research vessels, at sea, several times per year. In coordination with other technicians, ship's crew, and visiting science parties, supports scientific research mission objectives at all stages from planning stages to at-sea execution. Applies basic IT professional concepts, department policies and procedures to resolve routine issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. Works on problems of limited scope. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

  • Overtime and weekends may be required.


  • Basic knowledge of several areas of IT.

  • Proven ability to install software and troubleshoot basic problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Basic understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Basic understanding of data management operations and database administration.

  • Basic knowledge of computer security best practices and policies. Ability to put knowledge into practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

  • Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated testing and planning skills. Ability to communicate and plan with other persons of varied technical background.


  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be willing and able to travel globally without restrictions.

  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) through the

  • Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

  • Must be willing and able to spend up to six months at sea annually, in one to two month increments.
