The Senior Aquarist will be responsible for assisting Associate Curators in leading a team of aquarists in the husbandry, acquisition, and disposition of a variety of species. The incumbent will be responsible for the daily husbandry, cleaning and maintenance, and design of exhibits and animal enclosures which provide appropriate and enriching habitats for the animal collection. Work with the Animal Health team to ensure the highest standards for all animal health and establish and maintain humane, respectful and environmentally responsible husbandry practices that will serve to the highest AZA standards. Provide input to Associate Curator on developing and achieving team goals with other aquarium departments.

  • Must be able to work weekends, occasional nights, major holidays, cover other staff absences as needed, and to respond to emergencies.


  • Bachelor's Degree in biological science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. College level knowledge of marine biology, fisheries, ecology or a similar field of expertise.

  • Two (2) years of experience in management of staff, volunteers, programs, or projects at a zoo, aquarium, or related facility.

  • Four (4) years of aquatic fish and invertebrate husbandry experience in a zoo, aquarium or related facility.

  • Proven understanding of the knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering aspects of maintaining biological systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in the acquisition, collection and transport of aquatic animals.

  • Thorough knowledge of animal health as it relates to fish and invertebrate quarantine and medical protocols, disease diagnosis and treatment. Familiarity with various medications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry, health, and life support systems.

  • Proven knowledge of aquarium life support systems (e.g. temperature sensors, O2, ORP, filters, compressed air, plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical).

  • Strong knowledge of water quality testing and analysis of aquarium systems.

  • Proven ability to operate and manipulate small power boats while conducting various collection procedures.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Established ability to lead staff, volunteers, and interns. Demonstrated ability to work well with others.


  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver License.

  • SCUBA certification required with the ability to become an AAUS scientific diver within 6 months.
