DESCRIPTION

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is the leading unit within the UC San Diego Health cluster of Student Health and Wellbeing, delivering campus-based mental health services to over 38,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver community based, culturally proficient counseling services, outreach programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities.

Rooted in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success and retention and works toward the maintenance of an inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic and career goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services and the Post-doctoral Resident Training Program is APPIC affiliated. CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and client experience measurements.

UCSD CAPS is seeking a skilled mental health professional, experienced in reducing barriers to student mental health care in a multicultural university environment, to provide counseling and clinical services for a diverse student population. Primary responsibilities for this position will be addressing the mental health needs, especially the social/ecological and psychological experiences and dynamics affecting the University Black student populations, to foster their academic success and wellness at UCSD. Position requires proven training, expertise, commitment, and sustained engagement in working with African American students and students of color towards their personal development, well-being, and academic success, through culturally proficient individual, group and community interventions.

This licensed professional performs psychological assessments towards diagnosis and the formulation of a treatment plan, the provision of focused psychotherapy and referral of students to appropriate level of care. Also participates in after hours, on-call, and urgent care coverage. The incumbent provides consultation to faculty, staff and administration, engages in mental health promotion and education to a diverse college population, and delivers preventive outreach including psycho-educational programming and evaluation. Incumbent also provides supervision and training of CAPS Post-doctoral Residents and maintains quality assurance and improvement in compliance standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D or Psy.D. from an accredited program in clinical or counseling psychology and completion of an APA accredited internship

  • Current, valid license in California as a psychologist. Out-of-state licensed psychologists have 180 days to complete licensure requirements in the State of California.

  • Proven ability to conduct culturally proficient and focused individual, conjoint, couples, and family counseling and psychotherapy, as well crisis intervention at an individual and community level

  • Expertise working with Black/African-American students and students of color, including proven success addressing their social/ecological and psychological experiences and dynamics on campus to foster their matriculation and academic achievements.

  • Sustained knowledge and experience working with a culturally diverse college populations including ability and expertise with traditionally under-served student groups

  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective outreach programs and provide consultation, mental health promotion, and preventative psycho-educational outreach services.

  • Thorough knowledge associated with providing evaluation, diagnosis and psychotherapy services through intake clinical interviews, psychodiagnostic assessment, treatment plan formulation and recommendations.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct group counseling and psychotherapy, as well as forums and psycho-educational workshops

  • Academic and experiential knowledge of psychotherapeutic processes and procedures as well as working knowledge of psychodiagnostic procedures and techniques, including developmental and abnormal psychology.

  • Ability to work well and energetically in a fast paced service environment with changing priorities, serving a large volume of students effectively on an appointment or walk-in bases.

  • Ability to work independently, initiative, and work effectively and collaboratively, delivering consistent performance in a service environment with a student centered approach that requires coordination of care.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must have flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed, for after-hours emergency coverage.
