The Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment (CAICE) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Center for Chemical Innovation located at CASPO with ten partner academic institutions across the United States. CAICE focuses on improving our understanding of how aerosol particles impact the environment, air quality, and climate. Using computational tools and state-of-the-art instrumentation, including a novel approach with a real-world ‘beaker’ to generate aerosols, CAICE brings together a strong research team to focus on the critical area of aerosol chemistry, one of the largest current gaps in our understanding of climate change. This Center is building the next generation of tools for studying complex chemical processes as well as the fundamental theories to explain these processes.
Understanding and Protecting our Planet (UPP) is UC San Diego’s new strategic plan that nurtures and supports a collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture that advances the frontiers of knowledge, shapes new fields, and disseminates discoveries that transform lives. The initiative has 4 major research sub-themes: (1) mapping environmental microbes, (2) coastal air quality in a changing climate, (3) impacts of ocean-derived airborne pollutants, and (4) multidimensional connections between microbes, climate and health. Interdisciplinary research centers such as CAICE and cross-divisional joint hires related to UPP have catalyzed new interdisciplinary research efforts as well as strengthening existing connections and projects. For example, a new SIO Center, the Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, focuses on processes that control complex interactions between climate and natural and human systems, including adaptation to climate change and its consequences where CAICE focuses on improving our understanding of how aerosol particles impact the environment, air quality, and climate and on exploring the chemistry of aerosols as mentioned above. Finally, several new joint hires in UPP areas have allowed the campus to recruit interdisciplinary individuals who bridge all parts of campus while augmenting our expertise in genomics, environmental chemistry, microbiology, health effects, and climate research.
The CAICE/UPP Laboratory Assistant will assist in the field sampling campaign to collect aerosol, river water and seawater samples. The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for preparation of materials needed for the sampling. After sample collection, the specimens will be adequately processed and stored for subsequent analysis, including microbiome sequencing, metabolomic mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, nutrient composition analysis, etc. Daily measurements of seawater conductivity, salinity and temperature will be taken at multiple locations. Aerosol particle counts and size distribution will be measured using Aerodynamic Particle Sizer Spectrometer (APS), Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS), Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) and PurpleAir PA-II-SD sensors. Bioaerosol particles will be measured using a Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor Neo. Black carbon aerosol particles will be measured using an aethalometer. Meteorological data will be collected from different publicly available repositories and through multiple Magellan MX600 meteorological stations. The incumbent will be responsible for the accurate and complete collection of all the above-mentioned data types.

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Excellent laboratory and organization skills, including preparation of sample collection material, solid-phase extraction, pH and salinity measurements.
Demonstrated experience in handling weather data, as well as ambient aerosol number, sizing and composition data.
Experience in communication with local Life Guard, State Park and Border Patrol authorities and coordination of sampling permits and fieldwork access.
Strong ability to work both independently (once trained) and as part of a team.
