The Data Systems Analyst develops, maintains and documents software features for fusion and visualization of oceanographic data in an application aimed at supporting mission planning and piloting of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). A wide variety of data are supported including gridded ocean model output and in situ environmental sensors for wind, ocean currents and waves, ship AIS and sonar imagery. The application is written in Java using NASA's WorldWind API, an open-source 3D virtual globe. Plugin-based features are used to extend functionality as well as enable custom builds for specific applications.

The position supports the full software development life cycle for plugin including developing plugins for a software application written in Java using NASA's WorldWind API, an open source 3D virtual globe. The incumbent will be responsible for relevant research applications of fusion and visualization of oceanographic data aimed at supporting mission planning and piloting of UUVs and AUVs. Develop real-time and near real-time data acquisition and long-term storage routines for a variety of discrete and gridded scientific data types including in situ observations, remote sensing datasets and model output.

  • Must be willing and able to travel. Travel requires occasional at-sea work, typically 1 - 2 trips per year, approximately 20-30 days per year, but can vary year to year.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.

  • Proven software repository skills. Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards. Knowledge relating to logical data design, data warehouse design, data integration or the management of web content or other unstructured data.

  • Thorough experience with common programming tools. Proficiency in Java and NetBeans with Maven. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.

  • Demonstrated experience in UI design and data visualization.

  • Demonstrated experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.

  • Familiarity with system administration in UNIX, LINUX, OSX, and Windows operating environment.

  • Strong experience implementing, documenting with, and maintaining software revision control using tools such as Git.

  • Proven testing and test planning skills. Demonstrated experience in developing and applying quality control measures.

  • Familiarity with security protocols: HTTPS, VPN, WEP, SSH, SCP. Intermediate knowledge of relevant rules and regulations. Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.

  • Familiarity with important types of data models such as logical/relational models, dimensional models and document models. Ability to prepare simple data models under guidance of more senior professionals.

  • Strong analytical and design skills. Ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems. Critical thinking skills and attention to detail. Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Strong service orientation skills. Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel. Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Ability to work with others under demanding conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time.


  • A background check is required for this position. Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and must have access to reliable transportation.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain secret security clearance; must be a U.S. Citizen.
