DESCRIPTION

Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical Informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translational research, clinical encounters, and population studies.

The goals of the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research.

This department leads multiple federally and non-profit funded biomedical research projects, which are focused on the integration, analysis, and sharing of biomedical and health care data for the scientific community, as well as patient-centered research. In addition, the department runs a complex computational infrastructure that allows access and analysis of these data in a privacy-preserving manner.

The Clinical Research Coordinator will recruit and assist with recruiting study participants for DBMI research studies. Administer standardized computerized questionnaires to research subjects. Appropriately respond to questions from study participants, and obtain informed consent for research participation. Administer bio-specimen collection, including blood and/or saliva collection, and label, store, transport and/or send bio-specimens to lab. Manage data and prepare and maintain research participant files. Provide reports, as needed. Assist with equipment maintenance and ordering supplies, as needed. Perform quality control on patient files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A current California Phlebotomy License or equivalent.

  • Theoretical knowledge or Bachelor's Degree in a life science or related discipline; or equivalent education and experience.

  • Familiarity with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to ensure confidentiality, privacy and security of patient information.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with medical terminology.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with study participants, researchers and non-researchers.

  • Must be willing to complete large volumes of recruitment phone calls.

  • Excellent skill in writing concise and understandable documentation of procedures.

  • Proven ability to work with online calendars, databases and tracking tools, both on a desktop computer and tablet. Experience with electronic data management, including spreadsheets.

  • Ability to work professionally and as part of a team, keeping track of any ongoing or new problems or requests.

  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals across the range of ethnicity, cultures, socioeconomic conditions, academic and professional backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and other personal factors, both inside and outside the organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in both Spanish and English is highly preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be willing and able to travel. Responsible for driving own vehicle and/or commuting to various locations in community.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. Overtime and weekends may be required.
