DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, perform technical duties and act as Lab Manager. Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in managing performance of laboratory and field experimental procedures. Assist PI and lab members in designing and developing research projects. Serve as liaison between PI and Biology Section Business Office concerning research activities. Gather, review and provide technical data and expertise. Serve as a technical resource.

The Lab Manager will also perform supply management, monitor laboratory safety, and oversee lab modifications. Facilitate contact with lab members and volunteers such as meetings, events, and travel-related activities. Perform experimental procedures for data collection in field including underwater sampling using SCUBA, handling of underwater sampling and video equipment, and obtaining social/questionnaire survey data. Perform and assist in the design of community-based research projects. Assist in synthesizing reports and disseminating research results.

  • Must be flexible and available to work variable hours 70% of the time based on department needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and three (3) years of laboratory experience; or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two (2) years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven knowledge of oceanography, marine fisheries, environmental economics, and interdisciplinary research.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of artisanal fisheries, including in Mexico.

  • Proven experience in scientific diving; must be Divemaster SCUBA certified.

  • Demonstrated experience with underwater video/camera equipment.

  • Experience designing and analyzing social science research projects in the context of fisheries and marine conservation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective work direction to other lab personnel.

  • Demonstrated experience managing funds and providing input for budget projections.

  • Proven experience in and knowledge of writing for marine related themes. Ability to translate scientific data analysis into public communications to be used for educational purposes.

  • Proficient computer skills. Experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, Mendeley Desktop, and Tableau.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academics, staff, and students along with government representatives, private organizations, and the public.

  • Excellent and highly effective communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on telephone, and in writing. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on telephone and through writing.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision at times. Effective time management skills and ability to manage workflow and priorities, following through on tasks to completion. Strong organizational skills.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be Divemaster SCUBA certified.
