Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of facilities management issues. Works on facilities management problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Under direction of the CAO, the incumbent will serve as SIO Biology Section's Facilities Manager in matters related to section facilities, safety and space management, including developing and maintaining tools for reporting, integrating and analyzing available data. The Biology Section is located in fifteen different buildings at SIO. Serve as primary support to the Biology Section CAO in all matters regarding facilities space planning, project oversight, space utilization analysis and utilization reporting. Serve as primary contact for Section on facility, safety, and space matters, developing communication strategies and proactively communicating with CAO, Section Head, section members, campus, and SIO service departments. Develop and maintain efficient system to monitor current current departmental space utilization, requests for new and/or additional space and priorities for space assignment. Develop tools to report and integrate data associated with space, safety and facilities; analyze information. Conduct needs assessment and make recommendations to the CAO and Biology Section Head for space needs projections and assignments. Review space utilization plans to ensure compliance with safety guidelines. Work with SIO Facilities group, UCSD Facilities Management and CAO to coordinate department construction and renovation projects from inception through final occupancy. Coordinate faculty relocation and removals. Serve as point of contact for new faculty hires and moving companies to ensure smooth as possible household and office moves.

  • Must be able to walk between multiple buildings, including up hill and down.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required for special projects, and responding to incidents and emergencies involving facilities. Overtime may be required.


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance.

  • Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents.

  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures of safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to coordinate and manage complex space planning and analysis, facilities construction, to oversee renovation projects, perform space utilization analysis, and project budget development. Ability to manage details of complex construction projects and moves.

  • Skills to work under pressure of deadlines in a stressful environment.

  • Active listening, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to effectively resolve questions, concerns, issues or problems and ensure cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Working organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines, to establish goals and work load priorities, and to meet project deadlines within budget and time constraints.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
