UC San Diego Health seeks a dynamic, distinguished executive to serve as its inaugural Chief Administrative Officer, Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (CAO) to lead this work. This is a key senior executive leadership position that will provide the vision, leadership, and strategic planning of UC San Diego Health initiatives that promote anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion as essential elements of the health system’s mission to deliver outstanding patient care through commitment to the community, groundbreaking research and inspired teaching.
UC San Diego Health has been caring for the community for more than 50 years. The system is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California System, collectively known as UC Health. These medical centers comprise the fourth largest health care delivery system in California and train nearly 50% of the state’s medical students and medical residents. UC San Diego Health has a three-part mission of clinical, research and teaching excellence. The system is comprised of three hospitals operating under one license which include UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with 390 beds, Jacobs Medical Center with 364 beds, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center with 54 beds. There are also numerous centers and ambulatory clinics located throughout the county to deliver care to the entire region.
The CAO will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer of UC San Diego Health, and the Vice Chancellor of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for UC San Diego, and will serve as a member of the Health System Executive Team. It is expected that the CAO will partner closely with senior leaders in the office of the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences to ensure there is alignment of anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the health system.
The successful candidate will be a thought leader and/or scholar in the field of health equity, diversity and inclusion, and a proven record of accomplishment while partnering with key stakeholders at all levels of an organization, including experience working with an executive leadership team. The CAO must be comfortable with ambiguity and possess a spirit of innovation. Additionally, this person will show evidence of successfully leading, developing, and implementing evidence-based equity, diversity and inclusion strategies within large, complex organizations and an ability to manage and influence change throughout an organization through effective relationship building skills. Candidates must have a minimum of eight years of relevant experience. Prior experience in an academic health system with five or more years of direct equity, diversity and inclusion experience are preferred.
A Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration or related area; or equivalent combination of experience and training is required. An advanced degree in relevant field is preferred.
Ten (10+) or more years of relevant professional experience.
Five (5+) or more years directly related EDI experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
Proven experience in an academic health system or complex, integrated healthcare delivery system.
The CAO, Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion must possess a combination of skills and abilities to successfully manage a complex set of responsibilities in a high profile, academic health sciences organization, including:
- Professional experience successfully leading, developing, and implementing evidence-based equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies, programs, and tools at large, complex organizations.
- Regional or national visibility as thought leader and/or scholar in health equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Proven track record to partner with and influence key stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including prior experience working with an executive leadership team.
- Ability to manage and influence change throughout the organization with effective relationship building skills across the organization.
- Disciplined, data-oriented, analytical leader who possesses business intelligence that is equally as strong as their emotional intelligence. Strong ability to translate data into strategy and action plans.
- Strong project/program management skills with demonstrated effectiveness in the following: written and verbal communication, internal consulting, facilitation, influencing, and people leadership.
- High degree of cultural intelligence and technical mastery of diversity and inclusion strategy in academic medicine.
- Experience and understanding to navigate the hierarchy, tradition, competitiveness, and culture of academic medicine.
- Excellent collaboration skills; ability to work effectively across teams.
- Ability to work in a fluid, fast paced, matrixed environment.
- Demonstrated track record of spirit of innovation, openness to experimentation and trying new ideas to spark change.
- Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
