DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Senior Director of Learning Design and Innovation, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Director of Education will be responsible for leading and inspiring the Education and Volunteer team to advance the mission of Birch Aquarium at Scripps with a spirit of collaboration and community service. With strong leadership, administrative, and entrepreneurial skills, supervise and mentor staff, expressing UC San Diego’s commitment to excellence, innovation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Support all staff to pursue excellence, in community engagement, STEM/STEAM learning, and conservation-focused work. Curate and expand the education portfolio of programs for optimal mission impact, financial sustainability, and balanced workloads. Bring vision and experience to contribute to Birch Aquarium’s Revitalization initiative, including the establishment of an offsite learning center. Collaborate and innovate at the intersection of science, technology, and art.

Oversee program management, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Develop new projects, applying relevant theory and experience, aiming to connect people with nature and deepen understanding of our ocean planet through the breadth of science and technology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Direct operations and resources for Education and Volunteers, with experience overseeing, managing, and creating budgets of $1M or more. Work with aquarium colleagues to procure grants and gifts and create impact reports.

Analyze relevant data to inform strategic and operational decisions. Collaborate to develop and implement institutional and departmental strategic plans. Promote effective collaboration and communication up, down, and across the organization, expressing UC San Diego’s Principles of Community. Work effectively with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders within Birch Aquarium, Scripps Oceanography, UC San Diego, and with professional communities and communities at large, to achieve strategic goals.

  • Must be able to work a flex schedule to work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/BA in Science, Education, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience leading, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in any STEM field.

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience managing staff and operations to provide educational programs in any STEM field. Strong supervisory and leadership skills with a proven track record in complex social environments.

  • Thorough knowledge and skills in teaching in a university setting.

  • Proven experience interpreting complex science and/or technology to engage and inspire public audiences.

  • Demonstrated cultural competency and actionable knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Strong knowledge of training development and/or learning strategies, and program and educator assessment. Commitment to professional development and continuous learning.

  • Thorough knowledge of fundraising, donor cultivation and/or grant writing.

  • Proven budget and project management skills. Strong program coordination skills, including short and long range planning skills.

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication and strong leadership skills. Active listening skills.

  • Broad knowledge of museum education field, industry standards, technologies and current trends, and ability to apply knowledge to planning and operational practices.

  • Ability to drive innovation resulting in an organization that is a leader in its field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters Degree in Science, Education, or related discipline.

  • Professional-level competence in a second language.

  • Knowledge of and direct experience with research in any area of science and/or social science.

  • Experience in at least one of the following education-relevant topics: computing, data visualization, engineering, robotics, visual and/or sonic arts, GIS, new media such as AR/VR/MR.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid CA driver's license.
