The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Incumbent will work in a lab, whose members have diverse backgrounds, encompassing computer science, materials science, engineering, RNA biology, neurobiology, biochemistry, and therapeutic development. The majority of lab members use a combination of tissue-culture based and animal models and high-throughput genomics methodologies, to gain insight into RNA mediated cellular processes in health and disease.
To support our animal studies, we seek a motivated, diligent and highly organized individual to support our animal modeling studies. Incumbent work with lab trainees and staff to perform mouse injections, surgeries, tissue dissections, and immunohistochemistry procedures. Incumbent will also oversee mouse colony management, assist Animal Care Program staff in colony maintenance and animal care procedures. Previous experience in two or more of the following areas is essential: (1) mouse colony management, (2) animal surgery, (3) tissue processing and immunohistochemistry; (4) confocal microscopy.
Theoretical and/or practical knowledge in cellular and molecular biology, immunology, or related field as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience with immunohistochemistry and/or confocal microscopy.
Experience with all aspects of mouse colony management including mouse genotyping, husbandry methods, breeding, weaning, tail clipping of offspring, surgical procedures and injections, tissue processing and maintenance of water system, cage and water bottles.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, students, faculty and scientists. Ability to exercise judgement, initiative and resourcefulness in making decisions under supervision.
Excellent communication skills to interact with faculty, staff, and students as well as appropriate campus department personnel. Skill and knowledge to collaborate with colleagues.
Demonstrated ability to manage a complex work schedule.
Experience with general lab maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies.
Experience with UCSD Animal Subjects procedures.
Ability to maintain accurate data records from detailed observation of experimentation, and to transcribe precise, cogent results for possible scientific journal publication.
Proven experience performing molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA preparation/extraction, gel electrophoresis and Southern Blot.
Experience in performing biochemistry and laboratory techniques and demonstrated experience to prepare buffers and solutions, as well as various staining solutions.
Experience in clinical and/or research technical procedures, such as the developmental and production of transgenic mice, breeding colony management, blood and tissue collection.
Experience and theoretical knowledge of normal physiological data of rodents, particularly mice, and skill in the recognition of abnormal behavior and health.
Strong experience in operating bioclean environmental room and understanding the concept of sterility and transfer of pathogens.
Proficient knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and gMouse (mouse management software).
- Familiarity with University/NIH/AALAC policies and compliance procedures.
- Experience with UCSD EH&S regulations and laboratory safety procedures including radioactive waste management and disposal.
- Experience working with Macintosh OSX.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Must be willing to work flexible schedule in order to complete experiments as necessary.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
- Must be willing to work with mice and perform minor mouse surgeries and tissue dissections.
