The Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area that encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. It is under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, MD, Dean for Translational Research at UC San Diego.

Under the direct supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, performs a wide variety of patient care activities in support of clinic activity. This includes check-in and screen research subjects; schedule appointments; perform research nursing functions (i.e., obtain vital signs, perform EKG’s, give injections, insert intravenous catheters, perform blood draws and PK sampling, start and monitor infusions, dispense research medications, process research samples, assist with biopsies, perform glucose testing); assist RNs and physicians as required; convey instructions to research subjects, provide education regarding the research protocol to subjects as needed; maintain and restock equipment and supplies, including sterilization of instruments, disinfection and cleaning; answer phones and monitor front desk during times of high volume or staff absences; access electronic medical records and maintain research subject database. Other related duties as assigned.


  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) - issued by the state of California.

  • Certification in Intravenous Therapy issued by the state of California (LVN IV).

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.

  • At least one (1) year of previous LVN experience.

  • Experience performing venipunctures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill to perform basic nursing techniques, i.e., taking vital signs, height and weight, administering medications including injections, setting up sterile trays and assisting in procedures. Skill to provide application of dressings, preform venipunctures, assist with minor surgical procedures.

  • Skill in interviewing process in order to apply research procedures and assure understanding and compliance from the research subject.

  • Knowledge and skill in performing nursing procedures and principles of first aid.

  • Knowledge and skill in collecting and/or testing specimens.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of universal precautions and proper use of body mechanics.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills, using tact and diplomacy in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and a diversity of patients. Skill in appropriate telephone techniques.

  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently, coping with variable work loads, intermittent delays and emotionally charged situations. Skill to make independent decisions based on sound nursing theory and practice.


  • Experience in a clinical research environment. Knowledge of HIPAA and Human Subjects Regulations.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic medical equipment.

  • ACLS and/or ART.

  • Knowledge of PCIS, IDX, and EPIC computer systems.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Variable work hours, including frequent evenings and overnights and occasional weekends.

  • Occasional overtime may be required.

  • Must be willing to work at all CTRI clinical locations.
