The Department of Neurosciences is a large department within the UCSD School of Medicine. The Department’s mission is to create the synergies and define the ideas and programs that will allow us to transform the way our neurosciences community discovers, teaches and cares. We strive to conduct cutting-edge science and research and train the next generation of neurologists and researchers by fostering education at all levels and integrating the latest scientific and medical advances into the curriculum.

This position will have a focus in the area of Epilepsy. The UCSD Epilepsy Center is the only nationally certified epilepsy center in San Diego. With both inpatient and outpatient services, the UCSD Epilepsy Center offers the latest technological advances in medical therapies, surgical procedures and clinical trials. The Center evaluates, monitors and follows more than 1,000 patients per year.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, incumbents perform operational level duties as described in the Series Concept. The major emphasis at this level is ongoing direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic seizure or seizure-like problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching program’s participation in program planning and development of patient education information.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the NPI or NPII level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have California RN license, California NP License, Furnishing License Certification active and in good standing.

  • Must possess current NP Specialty Certification recognized by one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • BART or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine including purpose, supplies and/or equipment needed, how to perform test, exam and/or procedure accurately, infection control mechanisms and recording in medical record.

  • Demonstrated excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast paced environment.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine including purpose, supplies and/or equipment needed, how to perform test, exam and/or procedure accurately, infection control mechanisms and recording in medical record.

  • Demonstrated computer experience using Electronic Medical Records, databases, word processing and spreadsheet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Recent experience in Epilepsy or Neurology.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to obtain medical staff privileges.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Must be able to work weekends and overtime as needed.
