#88618 (NP) Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner, Per Diem

Under the direction of the Program Director in Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will function as a provider of patient care in the fields of Cardiothoracic Surgery/Intensive Care Units. Provide full clinical support in management of inpatients and outpatients. Plan, implement and evaluate health care treatments for cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.

The NP will also function as a surgical assistant in the operating room, in the clinics, and on the wards, all in coordination with established surgical services. Direct supervision will occur by assigned attending surgeons, or Chief Residents. This position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the cardiothoracic surgical patient, from pre- to peri- to post-op settings. Participates in research and/or quality assurance studies. Function as liaison financial counselors, social workers, and research nurses. Position requires special skills and knowledge in the fields of cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and wound care.

  • California RN license, California NP license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • Must possess current NP Specialty Certification recognized by one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Recent experience with cardiothoracic patients.

  • Theoretical background in: anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Skill to operate appropriate medical equipment, i.e., Swan-Ganz catheters, central venous pressure monitors, electrocardiograph machines, cardiac defibrillator, transducer systems, digital read-out equipment, and medical computer systems.

  • Skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

  • Proficiency in saphenous vein harvesting, both with open and endoscopic techniques.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must be able to work successfully within a team environment.


  • 3 years of working NP experience, particularly with cardiothoracic patients.

  • Prior experience as a surgical first assist.

  • Epic experience.


  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and various locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

  • Must be able to obtain medical staff privileges.

  • Some weekend work may be required.
