Under the direction of the Hand and Sports Medicine Service physicians, the Nurse Practitioner will provide patient care in the support of the Hand and Sports Medicine Service. Will provide clinical and surgical assistance and support in managing inpatients and outpatients. Will assist in the operating room, assist with patient evaluations including: history and physical, patient preparation, and management. Identify and solve complex clinical problems and communicate directly with the supervising transplant physician. Provide patient education and assist with clinical research protocols. Function as a liaison with health systems personnel including case management coordinators, financial counselors and social workers. Assist in data collection, input and analysis. Participate in departmental community outreach activities. Other duties as assigned.


  • State of California R.N. and N.P. License, State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number, Current Basic CPR Certificate, and RN First Assist.

  • Accredited NP Specialty Certification (i.e. AACN, AANP).

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Minimum one (1) year of NP experience in orthopedics.

  • Knowledge of common orthopaedic problems and treatments.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems (specializing in spine evaluations), and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures used in clinic. Must understand purpose, required supplies and/or equipment, how to perform procedure accurately, infection control, an accurate documentation of medical chart.

  • Skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

  • Knowledge of applicable research protocols and the ability to manage all aspects of each protocol.


  • Two (2) or more years of NP experience in orthopedics.

  • Hand & Sports Medicine experience.

  • Current ACLS Certificate.


  • Must be able to obtain medical staff privileges.
