Under the direction of the Division Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma, incumbent functions as a Nurse Practitioner of inpatient care in the fields of Orthopaedic Surgery, including trauma, hand, foot and ankle, spine and other orthopaedic inpatients under the provision of an attending Physician. Provides clinical support in the management of inpatients, including admission, perioperative management, discharge planning and ensuring appropriate follow up, implements and evaluates healthcare treatments of orthopaedic surgery patients. Provides patient care on specific inpatient services. Close interaction with consultants, case managers, and social workers for thorough and timely patient care and appropriate discharge plans, rehabilitations, medications and follow up. Direct supervision will occur by assigned attending surgeons or chief residents. The position requires a strong emphasis on care of the ortho inpatients, from pre- to peri- to post- op settings. Participates in ongoing research and/or quality assurance studies as required. Functions as liaison to counselors, social workers, research nurses, and consultants. Position requires special knowledge, skills and abilities in the fields of fracture management, rehabilitation, wound care, and prevention of surgical complications.

State of California R.N. and N.P. License, State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number.
Must have NP Specialty Certification recognized by one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.
BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date.
Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.
Minimum six (6) months of recent working NP experience.
Knowledge of common orthopaedic problems and treatments.
Knowledge necessary for instructing house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of surgical care.
Ability to properly counsel patients and families, particularly regarding perioperative risks and management.
Ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient and outpatient plans of treatment.
Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.
- Must be able to obtain medical staff privileges.
