The Director of Nursing for Moores Cancer Center is responsible for creating and promoting a professional nursing practice environment consistent with a world-class cancer center. The Director reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer for Oncology Services and provides overall administrative direction and leadership for all clinical staff throughout the Cancer Center, including the multi-disciplinary clinic, infusion center, procedure suite, BMT, radiation oncology and community satellites.

The Director is also responsible for working in concert with nursing leadership in the Hospital to ensure continuity of care. The Director will oversee policies and procedures and is accountable to the Chief Clinical Officer for the UC San Diego Health System for the practice of Nursing and serves on the Nursing Council. The Director will also participate in the analysis, planning and strategic formation of Cancer Center clinical program goals and growth strategy.

Director is responsible for planning, directing and evaluating activities related to patient care and treatment, including: implementation of the Cancer Center’s philosophy and goals, standards for nursing practice, and the management and development of nursing & clinical personnel. Position develops clinical patient care & nursing service objectives, policies and procedures to ensure best practice.

Provides operational leadership for nursing and patient care services. Leads, directs, and monitors the delivery of patient care for outpatient services throughout the Cancer Center. Assures development, implementation and evaluation of evidenced based, quality clinical nursing practice consistent with current nursing practice, institutional and national practice standards. Implements patient care standards as well as quality assessment and improvement programs. Assumes leadership role in managing the quality of services provided at the unit level, across the care delivery continuum and within the larger organization. Ensures continuity of care from inpatient services to outpatient clinical care. Creates systems and infrastructure to enhance coordination of care.

Actively participates in transition planning for the new Jacobs Medical Center. Accountable for eliminating barriers and identifying solutions for patient centered care. Actively develops strong relationships and partnerships within and across the organization to improve patient outcomes. Assures a measurable, outcome focused, systematic approach to care delivery. Assesses patient needs and develops standards of care to improve the patient experience. Manages interface between clinical research and patient care to increase participation in clinical trials. Supports innovation by integrating research-based findings into daily patient care practices. Ensures staff involvement with interdisciplinary clinical research projects. Provides effective and efficient budget management that assures the best utilization of resources.

Provides direct supervision to nursing management and directs programs and services through delegation. Establishes effective nursing leadership throughout the Cancer Center. Evaluates service needs and staffing requirements to assure safe practice and appropriate staffing levels. Develops and implements health care related training that assures the best possible delivery of health related support and services. Creates and supports an environment where staff can practice with autonomy.Reviews patient and staff satisfaction data and responds with appropriate action plans. Provides leadership to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulations, and nursing practice standards.


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in related field required. A Master's Degree in Nursing preferred.

  • Progressively responsible experience in a clinical setting for a minimum of seven (7) years, five (5) of are in a management role.

  • Must have experience in Oncology care. ONS certification preferred.

  • Must be a California Registered Nurse.

  • Knowledge of Healthcare industry and functional discipline to be managed.

  • Knowledge of management principles, processes and procedures.

  • Effectively skilled in verbal and written communication.

  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of hospital information systems and office applications.

  • Skill in developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships as required in the operating environment.

  • Experience in leading and building teams in nursing and across inter-disciplinary teams.

  • Ability to lead by example, inspire and reward nursing excellence.

  • Skill and ability to coach and develop others. Must be able to plan, organize and delegate responsibilities.

  • Must be able to analyze and solve problems effectively.
