The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will assess and manage patient health problems including actual and potential conditions within an outpatient Headache Neurology clinic. Plan, implement and evaluate health care treatments. Under the supervision of an attending neurologist, assess laboratory findings including blood tests, electromyography, MRI, CT Scan and X-rays. Utilize critical thinking skills to individualize patient care in order to manage illness, promote well being, foster rehabilitative and disease preventive life style choices. Prescribe medications and supportive therapies to help maintain health. Communicate with patients, their significant others and their primary health care providers. Responsibilities include assessing individual participants health status, performing detailed neurological examinations, assessing current drug therapies and potential interactions, liaising with Primary health care providers, interpreting laboratory results, and performing Chemodenervation injections. Provide current information on migraine and or facial pain research developments and education regarding medications to both participants and ancillary staff. Help research participants to understand their disease process and medications. Communicate clinical findings to physicians, research scientists and lay persons on a weekly basis. Educate nurses and ancillary staff about disease processes, facial injections for Chemodenervation medications, physical examination and history taking as well as detailed neurological examination. Serve as a resource for RN's to aid with clinical queries. Provide telephone triage, including prescribing necessary pharmacological interventions, including providing emotional support to the patient significant others.


  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • Current NP Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year licensed NP work experience, headache experience preferred. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

  • Possess knowledge of common Neurological disorders and how to manage them, including knowledge of pharmaceutical treatments their side effects and interactions.

  • Ability to take detailed medical history, perform physical examination and evaluate pertinent health deficits.

  • Possess knowledge of Headache disease, treatments, drug developments, drug interactions and side effects.

  • Communication skills that will ensure effective record keeping, management of patients health care needs and collaboration with other clinicians and study subjects.

  • Provide telephone triage to Neurology Headache patients, including appropriate referral.

  • Interpretation of diagnostic tests and appropriate follow up treatment.

  • Primary resource for post-Chemodenervation injection complications and abnormal blood test results.

  • Maintain/utilize computerized databases including but not limited to Epic, MS Word, MS Excel, and/or PowerPoint.

  • Ability to extract pertinent information from data in order to diagnose an individual's neurological disorder.

  • Responsible for evaluating diagnostic work sheets and providing a definitive diagnosis.

  • Knowledge of FDA regulations and Guidelines.


  • Three or more years of working NP experience.

  • Work experience with headache patients.

  • Neurology experience.

  • Work experience with multi-disciplinary teams.


  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.

  • Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.
