The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide per diem patient care coverage for various UC San Diego Health Urgent Care and Express Care Clinics. The NP will primarily provide patient care for UCSD Primary Care, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine patients at our Express Care clinic locations in Encinitas, downtown San Diego, and Eastlake. These clinics are open seven days a week, including various holidays. Express Care is a walk-in option for common health care needs including coughs and colds, sore throats, ear infections, and simple fractures or sprains as well as wellness visits for certain kinds of prescriptions or camp or school health screenings.
The NP may also be required to work in Urgent Care as needed (La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo). The Encinitas and downtown Express Care clinics, as well as our Urgent Care clinics have 12-hour shifts.

The NP will follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan. Assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The NP is expected to practice consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, incumbents perform operational level duties as described in the Series Concept.
Collaborate judgment with off-site physician is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care for Express Care patients. Collaborate on-site with physician as needed at Urgent Care. Under general supervision, the NP performs operational level duties as described in the UCSD Performance Policy. The major emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic health problems. Assignments may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning and development of patient education information.
This is a per diem position to cover both weekday and weekend needs. The per diem requirement is to be available 4 - 6 shifts per month, including one weekend.
Completion of an accredited Family Nurse Practitioner Program (FNP).
California RN license, California NP license, Furnishing License Certification.
Must possess current NP Specialty Certification recognized by one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.
BLS and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
Current PALS certification, or required to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Minimum two (2) years recent working NP experience, including experience in Primary Care and/or Urgent Care.
Proficient computer experience using Electronic Medical Records, databases, word processing and spreadsheet.
Must be ability to manage own patient load.
Must be able to work within a team environment.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong ability to interact positively and effectively with professional and nonprofessional staff, patients, families, and community support groups.
Three (3+) or more years of recent NP experience in Primary Care and/or Urgent Care.
- Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to work various hours (including weekends and holidays) and locations based on business needs.
