DESCRIPTION

The candidate selected for this role will serve as an expert Cardiology nursing clinician, educator, researcher, consultant and leader for nursing staff, patients, families and members of interprofessional health care teams. This position will work as a team member with education staff to support the Cardiovascular service line, which includes critical care, progressive care, assist devices, ECMO, cardiac procedures, and other cardiology services within the UC San Diego Health System.

Writes/revises/reviews new and policies according to changes in standards and regulations. Consistently evaluates evidence based practice standards for implementation to improve quality patient care delivery. He/She will also coordinate and collaborate on nursing orientation, competency, curriculum development, performance improvement, and evidence-based practice efforts system wide in collaboration with nursing education and nursing leadership.

Under the direction of the department director or designee, the Nurse Educator prioritizes and manages multiple demands in an ever changing healthcare environment. The selected candidate is expected to practice autonomously, consistent with ANA Standards of Practice. All performance expectations associated with this position are performed at the Masters Level. Models clinical excellence and demonstrates expertise through mentoring staff nurses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required for the CNE role.

  • A Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN); and/or equivalent combination of experience/training is required for the CNS role.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) issued by the state of California.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Current professional nursing certification or must obtain within one (1) year of hire (e.g. CCRN).

  • Relevant educator experience.

  • Five (5+) or more years of relevant experience. Experience must include a minimum of three (3) years of recent ICU experience in an acute care hospital, including experience with advanced cardiac technology (assist devices, ECMO).

  • Possess and maintain expert knowledge of disease process, continuum of care and services, including wellness, screening, research, treatment, rehabilitation, and community.

  • Proficient with information systems and computer programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, planning and leadership skills. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with patients and their families.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with EPIC electronic health records.
  • Experience in an academic teaching hospital.
  • Experience in a Magnet Hospital.
  • Three years of experience as a CNS, Nurse Educator, or similar advanced practice role.
  • For CNS role: Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, or licensure/certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline.
