DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

The research laboratory in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Department of Medicine is seeking highly-motivated Research Associate (Full-time). The Research Assistant will assist with guided research in several different areas.

Conducting molecular biological experiments (i.e. cloning, development and application of Adenoviral- and Adeno-associated viral vectors, Western Blot, immunoprecipitation, site-directed mutagenesis, PCR, qPCR, single-cell RT-PCR), isolation of vascular endothelial/smooth muscle cells from mouse heart and lung, fluorescence microscopy experiments (i.e., measurement of Ca2+ and ROS concentration in cytoplasm/ER/mitochondria), and immunofluorescence experiment.

Perform data acquisition and analysis, grant and manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings at weekly lab meetings. Maintaining transgenic mice colony including breeding, genotyping, and recording, management of lab research records including methodological approaches, experimental records and protocols, chemical and order inventories, and maintaining a clean lab and the function of lab equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical and working knowledge in advanced molecular biology and cell physiology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques for cell culture.

  • Strong ability to contribute to experimental design, analysis, interpretation of the results, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience assisting with writing scientific manuscripts and contributing to teamwork on in vitro cell electrophysiological experiments.

  • Proven ability and experience to isolate heart and lung vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells and prepare primary cultured cells for molecular biological and cell physiological experiments.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in gene cloning and silencing, production of Adeno- and Adeno-associated virus to transduce genes in the cells and tissues.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in Western Blot, immunoprecipitation, site-directed mutagenesis, PCR, qPCR, and single-cell RT-PCR.

  • Proven ability and experience in electrophysiological experiments and immunofluorescence experiments using fluorescence microscope.

  • Demonstrated skill to work with animals, as well as animal and human tissues.

  • Proficiency using the following specialized programs; SnapGene, GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint.

  • Diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and instruct in optimal procedures for assays.

  • Ability to read scientific literature, understand appropriate study design, follow study procedures and protocol, and maintain participant confidentiality.

  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

  • Demonstrated effective time management skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be available to work some weekends & evenings to complete experiments.

  • Must be able to work with laboratory animals (mice).
