The individual will work as a Staff Research Assistant for the laboratory of Dr. Victoria Risbrough in the Department of Psychiatry, funded by the National Institute of Health or other funding agencies for similar physiology/MRI research projects. Duties include assisting the Principal Investigator (PI) with day-to-day affairs of study coordination for protocols with active recruitment, data management, analysis, manuscript preparation for those studies with completed recruitment, and administrative tasks associated with protocols at all levels of activity. Interact with PIs, Clinical Coordinator, Collaborating Scientists, pre- and post-doctoral fellows in guiding clinical protocols through regulatory approved processes, participant accrual and coordination of study activities. Track patient data in MS Excel and/or Access. Administer tests and measures of psychological and neuropsychological function such as MINI, CAPS, WAIS-IV, DKEFS, WCST, CVLT, and other measures. Administer MRI and physiological tests (EMG, GSR). Other research related activities include meeting organization, preparation and attendance. Level of previous work experience should allow for minimal supervision by the PI, allowing for independent function for a number of duties.


  • Theoretical knowledge of psychiatry, psychology and/or other mental health services in social science, with emphasis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Traumatic Brain Injury, and substance use disorders.

  • Experience reading and interpreting research protocols and policies.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with psychiatric populations.

  • Proficiency in neuropsychological test administration and scoring of WAIS-IV, D-KEFS, WCST, CVLT, and other similar measures.

  • Proficiency in using database software, including Excel, Word, Access, Power Point, etc.

  • Experience conducting clinical research activities and knowledge of the guidelines related to consent, ethical conduct and protection of human subjects.

  • Ability to provide training and work directions to student workers and volunteers.

  • Demonstrated experience with Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing administration with necessary reports (DoD, VA, UCSD).

  • Demonstrated experience with manuscript preparation and federal and private grant application preparation.

  • Familiarity and/or expertise with computer programming languages or demonstrated programming skills in relation to data collection, analysis and reporting.

  • Proficient in MRI scan data collection with human subjects (i.e., MRI safety and operator trained, experience with collection of structural and functional neuroimaging datasets, experience with data archival using command line interface).


  • Proficiency in administration and scoring of measures of psychological function such as MINI and CAPS.

  • Proficient in psychophysiological testing (e.g. EMG, GSR).

  • Proficient in handling and processing human tissues/fluids (blood, urine, saliva) for storage.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
