DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the principal investigator, the Staff Research Associate will perform molecular, biological, biochemical, cell biological techniques. Such techniques include cell culture, mammalian cell transfection, DNA cloning, DNA and RNA isolation and analysis, PCR, qRT-PCR, protein purification, and western blotting. Occasionally, the incumbent performs other techniques as required and will be required to participate in lab meetings and seminars related to the projects.

This position also encompasses a variety of laboratory maintenance duties that include: organizing and record keeping of reagents in freezers, refrigerators, and liquid nitrogen tank; managing inventory of all lab supplies; and maintenance of lab equipment.

  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends to meet project deadlines and process experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical and practical background and knowledge in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry as is typically acquired by a Bachelor’s degree and by a few years of lab experience in any of the related fields of study.

  • Demonstrated experience in biochemistry techniques; including SDS PAGE, Western blots and immunoblotting, and gel electrophoresis.

  • Proven experience working with tissue culture techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience in cloning and recombinant expression procedures. Proficiency in gene expression analysis techniques, such as quantitative RT-PCR.

  • Proven experience in protein expression in different cellular systems (e.g. mammalian cells, bacteria, insect cells) and purification of native or recombinant proteins using various chromatographic techniques (e.g. gel filtration, ion exchange, affinity chromatography, reversed phase, hydrophobic interaction chromatography).

  • Demonstrated experience using laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, pH meters, autoclaves and electrophoresis equipment.

  • Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

  • Proven experience and familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide training and work direction in areas of expertise to lab personnel as needed.

  • Proven experience and ability to maintain and prepare accurate records of all experiments and to assist in the preparation of data for publication.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing research work for publication.

  • Ability to make significant innovative contributions regarding experimental design and methodology by reviewing published scientific data in referred journals, as well as to make recommended changes to current protocols and practices.

  • Proven ability to make independent decisions, analyze situations, identify problems, develop innovative solutions, and initiate actions for effective program and project management.

  • Strong ability to learn the scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
