DESCRIPTION

The mission of the UCSD TRIO Outreach Program is to increase the post secondary matriculation of low income, first generation college students. Approximately 950 San Diego County students are served from five U.S. Department of Education grants.

UC San Diego TRIO Outreach Programs operates 3 summer programs aimed at low income, first generation high school students. Tutors will be assigned to work in 1 of the 3 summer programs and will work directly with grades 9th – 12th.

Tutors will act as a teacher’s aide during all classes, from 9am – 4pm, Monday - Friday. Location of classes will be either: Mount Miguel high school, SD City College or the UC San Diego campus. Tutors will be required to monitor and supervise approximately 15 - 25 high school students during English, College Seminar, Foreign Language, Math and Science.

Proficiency in high school level math and science will take priority in the hiring process. Tutors assigned to on campus programs, must meet students at the dining halls at 8:30am to make sure that they arrive to class with their assigned group by 9am. Tutors assigned off campus to work at a high school site, will be required to meet students directly at the classroom.

Tutors assigned to work off campus at a school site must have reliable transportation, and may be asked to adjust their work schedule to attend meetings, (for example arrive early or stay after students have been dismissed). Tutors are expected to actively participate in class and assist instructors with lessons. Based on proficiency of academic subjects taught, tutors may be asked to lead large group lectures or facilitate small group discussions. All tutors are expected to provide one-to-one or small group academic assistance.

All tutors will be expected to represent UCSD therefore professionalism and cross-cultural competency is essential when communicating with students, parents, teachers and program staff. Due to the complex nature of operating 3 distinct academic programs for over 120 high school students, tutors must be reliable and arrive on time to all assigned hours. Must be comfortable with enforcing rules with minors, addressing behavior concerns with students and leading student activities.

Tutors will report back daily on student attendance, behavior issues and academic progress on struggling students. Tutors assigned to work at UCSD, will participate in the Summer Food Services Program and will monitor participants during lunch. Tutors must have strong oral communication skills. Tutors are responsible for frequent communication with supervisors, especially as it pertains to their role in monitoring students’ progress.

Must attend mandatory summer program training from June 17th - 20th, 9:00am - 4:30pm at UC San Diego.

Candidates will be asked to indicate program preference and may be considered for both programs.

Program Three:

  • Work Schedule - 6/24 – 7/5, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 2:30pm

Must have own reliable transportation to and from assigned work location.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience with classroom tutoring, group tutoring or individual tutoring with high school level courses.

  • Demonstrated experience with keeping students on task and supervising minors in an academic setting.

  • Ability to understand and implement various instructional methods and strategies for increasing students academic skills. Ability to assist students with problem solving, finding solutions and approaching their academic work

  • Knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.

  • Ability to lead and supervise a group of people and facilitate group discussions. Ability to communicate effectively in one-one and group settings.

  • Knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.

  • Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.

  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of K-14 education.

  • Proven experience working cooperatively as part of a team. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • The tutors will abide by and enforce all University, Residence Life and TRIO policies and the UCSD/TRIO Code of Conduct and Principles of Community.
