The Research Project Manager will have a critical role in the newly formed UC San Diego Collaborative to Halt Antibiotic-Resistant Microbes (CHARM) which is being launched in 2019 as a successful proposal that gained support through the formal process UCSD Health Sciences Strategic Planning for Research.
The overarching goal of CHARM is to establish UC San Diego and its La Jolla Mesa Partners as a global leader in innovative, paradigm-shifting, research-driven solutions to combat the antibiotic resistance crisis, which inevitably presents as a major public health and natural security emergency for the current and coming generations. CHARM seeks to develop innovations in virulence factor inhibition, immune boosting, phage therapy, microbiome manipulation, vaccines, rapid detection technologies, systems biology, natural product discovery, and other cutting-edge technologies.
The CHARM Research Project Manager will be responsible for high-level guidance and support to UCSD investigators, project collaborators, affiliated institutions (local and international), biotechnology industry partners, and working with the faculty lead (Prof. Nizet) and other key members on the organizational management and strategic planning to carry out the mission of CHARM. Independently oversees critical aspects of the academic and research program and represents the program to outside organizations. Oversees administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for the program.
Helps faculty in design and development of major program components and administers the full range of the program’s operational requirements. Works with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of the Faculty Lead to establish CHARM agenda, fundraising, and objectives. Helps develop and maintain CHARM program website, social media presence and other promotional materials. In addition, this position this position will be responsible for facilitating the coordination of technical duties (e.g. contracts, regulatory issues) and research activities, and serving as the primary communication liaison with key stakeholders.
Terminal Degree (PhD, JD, MD, etc.)in a related field (e.g. Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Epidemiology); and/or equivalent experience and training.
A minimum of five (5+) or more years of relevant experience.
Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Strong leadership skills including meeting facilitation, cross-functional team integration, strategic thinking and advising. Must be able to create an environment for collaborative work necessary for the team to be effective.
Excellent project management skills and a background in research coordination including resource allocation, fiscal, personnel, and management of grants/gifts and contracts.
Proven experience planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating projects with ability to prioritize multiple and complex responsibilities and to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
Demonstrated experience developing effective protocols and internal controls for compliance with changing governmental regulations.
Experience with planning and leadership of operational and research/development initiatives. Strong management skills with the ability to maintain focus and to operate in an organized and effective manner in an environment that may have rapidly shifting demands and priorities.
Strong oral and written communication skills. Experience with communicating the status and content of technical projects to a variety of people in written form, in person, on telephone and email. Advanced presentation skills appropriate to persuasive communications with a very high-level technical audience.
Experience generating and analyzing project timelines, resources, and budget information. Strong understanding of financial resource planning systems, processes and ability to coordinate project-level budget/resource estimates and manage actual costs vs. planned cost.
Ability to proactively learn and independently apply campus policies on technology transfer, intellectual property, gifts, contracts, and grants.
Strong fiscal skills and experience working with budget information in a complex organization with multiple sites. Experience with and knowledge of finance, business management, and fund accounting.
Ability to create work plans and timelines to ensure timely completion of projects. Experience managing multiple tasks, often with competing deadlines including problem solving, negotiating, decision-making research and analysis, and interpersonal skills.
