Incumbent is responsible for server system administration for the Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory (LDL), using highly customized Gentoo Linux installations, and other enterprise installations including, but not limited to Red Hat and CentOS located in both physical and cloud-based data centers. Servers are used in all aspects of LDL activities including engineering source version control, metadata tracking, synchronous data processing, storage and distribution. In addition to these activities, a network of servers are also used as part of the real-time Iridium processing chain, in support of NOAA's Global Drifter Program, to decode over 1250 platforms' asynchronous weather observations in real-time, and routing onward to national weather centers through the World Meteorological Organization's Global Telecommunications System (GTS).

Incumbent will analyze and/or optimize new systems and provide enhancements to existing systems. Implement oceanographic solutions described at a Proof-of-Concept level by the outgoing incumbent. Replicate and administer databases responsible for the storage, real-time parsing and distribution of drifter data and their metadata. Fully administer systems including all aspects of security, networking, backups, load balancing, installations, user support, and general maintenance. Continual performance optimization, diagnostics and evaluation on all systems will be necessary.

Incumbent will participate in documenting the existing system design in addition to training their replacement prior to ending their appointment with the LDL. Will apply professional concepts and department and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve systems problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Performs routine work, with detailed instructions provided on new project and/or more complex assignments and initiatives. Within defined procedures and practices, determines appropriate action.

  • Must be willing to work evenings and/or weekends, if necessary.
  • May be required on-site for planned hardware upgrades and/or unplanned maintenance and upkeep.


  • BS in Computer Science, bioinformatics, or related scientific field.

  • Expertise and real-world experience in Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Perl/Python (LAMP) software stack. Demonstrated ability to configure and test RAID design.

  • Expertise and real-world experience administering Linux servers running a variety of distributions including but not limited to Gentoo, RHEL, and CentOS.

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Demonstrated proficiency with computer hardware and software in Windows/Unix/Mac environment.

  • Strong experience with database administration/integration to web applications, Real-time data acquisition, user interface design/implementation, and knowledge of signal processing.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing scripts of moderate complexity used to perform system maintenance and administration.

  • Proven ability to maintain data server backup system and administer network with and ability to update skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent/related functions.

  • Proven knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer security best practices and policies.

  • Strong understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Proven problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Ability to make choices optimizing the efficiency of workflow, speed of processing and clarity of data storage for subsequent use.

  • Effective verbal and written interpersonal communication skills in order to discuss research, results and ideas with others in a constructive and professional manner.

  • Excellent communication of technical subjects to non-technical audiences. Ability to write, elicit, and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and part of a team. Attention to detail and ability to follow through on independent and group projects, displaying aptitude for solitary and team-related endeavors.

  • Knowledge of UCSD campus networking resources for modifying IP tables, DNS records, and other networking services preferred.
