Under the general direction of the Chief of Staff and Operations (COSO) for Alumni, Career, Annual Giving, Pipeline Development and International and with dotted line reporting to the Executive Director, Prospect Development on the Advancement Operations and Campaign unit, the Senior Data and Business Intelligence Analyst provides reliable and timely high-level qualitative and quantitative data and trend analysis that supports the strategic planning and operational effectiveness of key Alumni engagement and student engagement programs.

Specifically, the incumbent studies internal and external data and employs data extraction, and data mining to provide information, knowledge, coordination, and tools that support the campus in achieving its engagement goals, as well as to provide assessments of Alumni and Career Center program effectiveness.

More specifically, responsibilities include but are not be limited to:

Reporting & Analysis:
In consultation with COSO Alumni, develops, implements and oversees a comprehensive unit-based business analysis based on overall unit strategies and needs, providing data-driven intelligence to aid in determining University-wide and unit goals.

Working closely with the COSO and ED-PD, develop and produce regular high-level analytical reports for senior leadership to aid in reviewing performance measures and for short- and long-term engagement strategies with alumni and students. Generate and maintain reports illustrating overall, and unit specific results. Consults with end users to gather and clarify data and reporting needs for complex business intelligence solutions and analytics.

Develops and produces performance reports for Alumni and Career Center operations including YTD progress toward goals, comparison with prior period and annual reporting. Implements ‘self-serve’ results delivery system with current and future technology tools. Working with the Advancement Business Intelligence Team provide prospect lists, reports, data-marts and report access for the unit team to leverage internally.

Prospect Identification:
Identifies and analyzes errors and problems for end users, developing and applying functional solutions and/or conducting specific training as needed. Conducts ongoing analyses of data sources and datasets. Identifies issues and collaborates on developing solutions to data management challenges. Develop and implement appropriate tracking and metrics in support of modeling efficacy.

Needs Assessment:
Work closely with leadership in the creation and implementation of updated alumni engagement, student engagement performance metrics tools. Interviewing non- technical end users in the Alumni and Annual Giving team, translate their business requirements and develop analysis or reporting solutions that answer their specific needs. Explain complex analysis processes to end users in easy to understand ways. Work with Advancement Operations and Campaign to obtain, share, append, and maintain information needed for market analysis and strategic planning projects.


  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in analytics, data mining, and/or statistical analysis.

  • Proven track record in analyzing, developing and proposing business process improvements using quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience in business analytics. Ability to understand complex relational data structures.

  • Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices.

  • Proven knowledge of relevant internal databases, BI applications and tools. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation. Experience in querying, cleansing and manipulating large data sets.

  • Advance critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop and effective solutions.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner. Interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.

  • Proven ability to analyze information, situations, problems, policies and procedures; separate problems from symptoms; identify potential solutions; apply solutions and formulate logical and objective conclusions from data and observations; communicate conclusions to a variety of personnel at various levels.

  • Advanced knowledge of analytical techniques, knowledge of SQL or other structured language, advanced knowledge of Excel required.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles and practices of philanthropy, sales or marketing.

  • Ability to leverage knowledge of data needs, data sources and data solution technologies to provide clients with accurate and timely (often real-time) results and analytical reports.

  • Adept in ability to learn quickly, apply creativity, understand complex processes and procedures, prioritize workload, set and meet deadlines, and perform well with a minimum of direct supervision.

  • Skill in understanding of quality service and group process with ability to work as part of a team and build consensus and collaboration. Ability to lead, mentor, and train others; ability o share skills and techniques with peers and colleagues.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and focus with attention to detail in fast-paced environment with constantly changing priorities. Detail oriented, with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities.

  • High degree of professionalism ethical sensitivity and discretion; ability to maintain a commitment to confidentiality.
