DESCRIPTION

The Cryo-TEM Facility at UCSD is a state-of-the-art, cross-campus facility dedicated to the high-resolution imaging of molecular and cellular samples under cryogenic conditions. The facility currently houses four TEMs: (1) A Tecnai Sphera, a 200keV instrument with a La86 gun and equipped with a CCD camera; (2) A Tecnai Polara, a 300keV instrument with a Field Emission Gun (FEG) and a DE20 direct electron detector; (3) An FEI Talos Arctlca, a 200keV instrument with a FEG, Volta phase plates and a K2 Summit direct electron detector; (4) A Titan Krios, a 300keV instrument with a FEG, Volta phase plates, a Quantum energy filter and a K2 Summit. Another Titan Krios, equipped with Volta phase plates and a K3 direct electron detector will be delivered in June 2019.

The facility houses an Aaul(os cryo-Dual-5Etes DualBeam for Life Sciences for the preparation of cryo-electron tomography samples using Focused Ion Beam milling, as well as all the ancillary equipment required for cryo-TEM. The Facility already has a Cryo-EM Project Specialist who assists users In the preparation and Imaging of biological cryo-TEM specimens. Responsible for sharing in the operational management of a multi-million dollar biological cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) facility and enabling outside users to benefit from its capabilities.

Responsibilities include assisting In the management of day to day operations of the facility, training and supervising scientists in all aspects of the use of microscopy equipment, with an emphasis on data acquisition. Critical to the position will be interfacing with potential users across the UCSD campus to help them develop and implement workflows that can lead to high-resolution structure determination and ensuring that the software-driven automation of the microscopes incorporates the latest developments in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have the ability to help manage a large, multi-user research facility and to perform all duties with limited supervision.

  • Ability to quantitatively analyze scientific results, communicate effectively with faculty, students, staff, vendors, and service engineers, have an acute attention to detail.

  • Must keep accurate and clear records, assist in the planning and writing of instrument-related grant proposals as needed.

  • Keep abreast of scientific literature concerning relevant new instrumentation and specimen preparation and imaging techniques, and manage time, set priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of research function.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.

  • Demonstrated working skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent manual dexterity and visual acuity are required.
