Under the general supervision of a development engineer:

Fabricate, update, and assist in the design of complex electronic circuits in oceanographic instrumentation and support equipment. Test and calibrate, troubleshoot and repair oceanographic instruments using specialized equipment and procedures with careful attention to catch potentially expensive design or construction defects. Assist in the electromechanical fabrication, maintenance, and preparation of seagoing support equipment. Assist in seagoing logistics and operations at sea. Help to maintain the laboratory.

  • Must be able to work effectively at sea or in foreign ports (cruises may be as long as 40 days per cruise and 4 months per year with 1-2 months typical).

  • Must be able to work overtime for sea trip preparation and deployment.

  • Must be able to move up to 50 pounds.


  • Extensive skill in microelectronic and electromechanical assembly (including discrete wiring, surface mount soldering, and chassis layout). Comprehensive knowledge of electronic packaging techniques and components.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand electronic schematics, mechanical drawings and manufacturers data.

  • Working knowledge of Macintosh and UNIX computers including their use in data organization and communication using word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and internet search programs.

  • Graduation from high school or a GED and five (5) years of technical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Graduation from college preferred.)

  • Demonstrated ability to modify schematics using McCAD schematics software. Ability to design PCB footprints using McCAD circuit board layout software.

  • Machine shop skills including the use of power and hand tools (such as a drill press or pneumatic wrench). Ability to maintain the organization of laboratory supplies, equipment, tools and documentation.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in using a variety of multimeters, signal generators, counters and power supplies.

  • Skill in making time domain measurements with a Tektronix DPO4034 digital oscilloscope, and frequency response measurements with a Stanford Research Systems SR785 dynamic signal analyzer.

  • Ability to catch design or construction defects in instruments before they result in expensive loss of data.

  • Ability to perform administrative duties: solid telephone skills, strong computer data entry skills, the ability to learn and follow University procedures and use forms correctly.

  • Knowledge of laboratory, shop and seagoing safety procedures. Ability to read and understand material safety data sheets (MSDS).


  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • Must have a valid California driver's license and forklift license.

  • Must have a valid passport.

  • Ability to work in remote locations and at sea under potentially adverse conditions for extended periods.
