On behalf of the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) and Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS), work on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Under the guidance of CDIP's management, work on oceanographic data analysis and data product development, program communications, and outreach and education activities. Contribute to the technical development of proposals. Support field work through SCUBA diving and instrument deployments and recoveries.

  • Ability to assist in the operation of small boats in the open ocean.

  • Knowledge of small boat operations safety requirements.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in ocean engineering; or equivalent experience/training.

  • Working knowledge of and experience with data visualization and analysis software and/or programming languages such as Matlab, R, or Python. Experience with Unix.

  • Experience with data mining of NetCDF files, manipulation and visualization of time series, spectral parameters and geospatial information.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with Arc GIS or similar geospatial software.

  • Experience creating and/or modifying web-hosted data products, apps, dashboards, and interfaces.

  • Demonstrated ability to become certified for scientific diving.

  • Ability to assist in the operation of small boats in the open ocean, demonstrated knowledge of boat safety requirements and safe operation of small vessel.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with web frameworks such as Django and Bootstrap.

  • Working knowledge of research function. Knowledge of interdisciplinary studies and ocean and earth sciences for guiding data product planning and management.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.

  • Demonstrated working skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of data-driven decision-making.


  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • Ability to become certified for scientific diving.
