Provide production and quality assurance support. Perform audits of MSDC areas of responsibilities to insure a quality product to the client. Assist in the fabrication, assembly, and modification of specialized equipment and research prototypes. Work with a variety of materials and metals. Utilize blueprints, graphs, drawings, and sketches for part accuracy. Operate standard machine shop equipment. Interact with researchers, engineers, and PI's. Maintain inventory control documents, first article requirements, and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) documents as required. Maintain calibration and preventive maintenance logs for Machine Shop tools and equipment. Provide support and assistance in the development and manufacture of oceanographic related instruments ie) o-ring specifications, and surface finish requirements.

  • Available to work overtime.

  • Able to stand for long periods of time.

  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects correctly.


  • Prior experience in quality control of machine shop products.

  • Skilled to operate machine shop tools (manual and CNC lathes and mills, grinders, jig bore machine, radial arm drill, deburr knives, and polishing equipment.)

  • Knowledge to problem solve issues related to the manufacturing of underwater instruments.

  • Prior experience maintaining inventory and quality control certification records.

  • Proven knowledge of trade materials, ie aluminum, plastic, ceramics, copper, stainless steel, and brass.

  • Strong knowledge and skills required to read and interpret blueprints or schematics to ensure proper dimensional specifications.

  • Knowledge to comprehend the nature of the job with guidelines that consist mainly of rough sketches and oral information as related to the basic design. Specific details are developed as fabrication progresses.

  • Knowledge and expertise in the field of o-ring specifications and surface finish requirements for underwater applications.

  • Experience using a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to provide part documentation and first article reports.

  • Manual dexterity in order to perform sub-assemblies at workbench. Knowledge of shop measuring devices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of tool design and metallurgy.

  • High degree of originality and ingenuity for solution of fabrication, assembly, installation, and related problems.

  • Graduation from high school, with emphasis on upper-level math, and eight (8) years of experience in general machine shop work, tool and die making or instrument making; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Previous experience in the design, fabrication, and production of instruments and hardware, for a variety of uses.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of shop practices and machinery principles, special tools and safety practices.

  • Experience providing contributions to enhance and optimize instrumentation design, fabrication processes, and instrumentation management.

  • Prior experience and knowledge in deburring, tapping, polishing, and finishing parts to blueprint specifications and customer satisfaction prior to delivery.


  • Must have a valid California driver's license.

  • Must be able to operate a forklift.
