The Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR) in the Department of Pediatrics conducts various behavioral-therapy studies aiming to decrease obesity and overeating in children, adolescents, and adults. The Center also conducts community programs and provides clinical services to children, adolescents, and adults referred from the Department of Pediatrics, Gastroenterology division and other organizations.

This position provides support to behavioral based research studies, clinical services, and community programs aimed at improving health, with a primary focus on weight reduction and treating eating disorders. Diverse populations are targeted including men, women, children, minorities, and other high risk populations.

Under direction of the Project Coordinator and/or Program Manager, the candidate will support the project/program team by conducting development, recruitment, measurement, intervention and treatment activities based on cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavior therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.

These include, but are not limited to: development of materials and recruitment; implementation of interventions; administering assessments; providing individual and group treatment; and adherence to general research activities and clinic procedures. Also requires gathering and maintaining detailed and accurate information on sessions with assigned study participants/patients according to protocols and procedures for protecting human subjects.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • One (1) year or experience providing individual, family, and/or group therapy or other relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a research setting. Knowledge of the health promotion and education field.

  • Skills associated with the delivery of health promotion and education programs.

  • Demonstrated experience developing patient educational materials and resources.

  • Effective interpersonal skills needed to work with diverse client group. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and pay attention to detail. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Must be proficient in MS Word, email, Internet use. Computer literacy and word processing skills with experience using database management software.

  • Proficient in filing and documentation skills with ability to maintain thorough, current, and confidential records of client/study participant progress.

  • Proven experience working with research study participants and knowledge of human subjects guidelines, working with community program participants, and/or clinic patients.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing cultural sensitivity to workplace situations.


  • Experience working in the area of obesity, general nutrition, psychology, and physical activity.
  • Master's Degree in in psychology, marriage and family therapy, health science, public health, and/or equivalent experience/training.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Fluency English (speaking and writing) is required.
  • Flexible schedule including the availability to work at least three evenings.
  • Access to reliable transportation is required for work that may occur within San Diego County.
