DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Spine Service physicians, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide patient care in the support of the Spine Service. Will provide clinical and surgical assistance and support in managing inpatients and outpatients. Will assist in the operating room, assist with patient evaluations including: history and physical, patient preparation, and management. Identify and solve complex clinical problems and communicate directly with the supervising physician. Provide patient education and assist with clinical research protocols. Function as a liaison with health systems personnel including case management coordinators, financial counselors and social workers. Assist in data collection, input and analysis. Participate in departmental community outreach activities. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • Current State of California Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) license.

  • Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number (only applicable when administering medicine).

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Six (6) months or more work experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Knowledge of common orthopaedic problems and treatments.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems (specializing in spine evaluations), and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures used in clinic. Must understand purpose,required supplies and/or equipment, how to perform procedure accurately, infection control, an accurate documentation of medical chart.

  • Skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written,verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

  • Knowledge of applicable research protocols and the ability to manage all aspects of each protocol.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs. Position may require on-call, overnight, evening, and weekend hours. May travel to various locations.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
