The Department of Anesthesiology employs over 200 academic and staff personnel and has an annual operating budget of $83 million in (School of Medicine and CPO) resources between Practice Plan Revenues, VAMC funding, Hospital and Medical Group Funding, UC Foundation, Research Sources and School of Medicine Funds.
There are over 85 clinical faculty, 20 Ph.D. faculty, 8 Postdoctoral Scholars, 42 residents, 16 Clinical fellows, 33 Certified Nurse Anesthetists, 1 Physician Assistant, 1 Nurse Practitioner and five bargaining units represented. The Department provides Clinical Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Services at Hillcrest, Thornton, Shiley, Children's, Jacob's Medical Center and the VAMC. The Department operates a Pain Clinic at Perlman. The Department's research programs include bench and clinical research programs located at the VAMC, MTF, CTF, BSB, Hillcrest, Thornton, Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine and the Altman CTRI.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for the management of the Patel Laboratory located at Biomedical Sciences Building, rooms 5011, 5013, 5020, 5021 and VA San Diego Healthcare System, room 6130. Incumbent regularly consults with Principal Investigator on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research problems; develops and refines existing protocols; reviewing scientific articles for use in the execution of broad research problems.
The employee would be responsible for overseeing core management for the Oroboros system. The employee would be the main technical authority for the system. The operation of this system also includes any additional training of new staff and students as well as coordinating with multiple other laboratories for their specific study needs. Works with research staff and collaborators outside the University, coordinating studies for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Responsible for a wide range of chemical and biological analyses including histological image capture and quantitative analysis of specific population of cells/neurons.
Performs associated data interpretation and quality control; report preparation and sign-off and archival of process-results documentation. Responsible for instructing laboratory personnel in protocols, proper equipment usage and Good Laboratory Practices and hazardous waste disposal in compliance with University Health and Safety Standards (EH&S). Responsible for equipment purchases and maintenance and purchasing laboratory supplies to insure uninterrupted laboratory use.
Advanced theoretical knowledge in Animal Science, Animal Physiology, Biology or related field; or equivalent combination of experience and education with the ability to make advanced contributions to research projects at a conceptual level.
Demonstrated experience in laboratory organization including the ability to train and provide work direction to personnel.
Proven experience with rodent surgical procedures, sterile, and suturing techniques, and surgical instruments. Experience in rodent tissue harvesting techniques including spinal cord, brain, liver and kidney tissue.
Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability in the development, maintenance, and execution of research protocols and techniques.
Strong knowledge of and experience with grant policy and procedures. Demonstrated experience assisting with grant budget development and revisions.
Demonstrated success and skill at researching, analyzing and evaluating information for preparation of grant proposals.
Proven knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.
Demonstrated demonstrated experience working with animal anesthesia and associated equipment; anesthetic vaporizers, flowmeters, gases and circuit systems.
Demonstrated experience interpreting physiological tests for laboratory animals including CSF (glucose, protein, white blood count, specific gravity, hematocrit, blood, chemistry panel).
Proven experience in various types of drug administration: intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intrathecal, epidural. Experience with injections including subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal and intradermal injections.
Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of personalities at all levels of the organization, work effectively as a member of a research team; and in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff of all levels, funders, and community partners.
