DESCRIPTION

~ This is a part time 50% Career position.

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in the development, design, fabrication, programming, and testing of prototype electronic modules (e.g., custom PCBs) in support of PI's research in hearing aids and technologies for improving healthcare. Will have general electronics research and development (R&D) support as its area of specialization.

The technical work will include understanding the research and working with one or more Principal Development Engineers in the development of projects undertaken at Calit2. Assists Development Engineers in the design, fabrication, assembly, microcontroller programming, and testing of analog, digital, and RF electronic prototype modules for mobile, wearable, IoT, and other applications from schematics, sketches, and verbal instructions. Interacts with students, staff and/or other researchers. Attends meetings and assisting in writing papers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions. Skill in designing printed circuit boards using commercial schematic capture and layout tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, Orcad, etc.).

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. Knowledge to begin applying application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail. Specifically in the area of wearable IoT devices.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Ability in designing, performing and analyzing research projects. Ability in recognizing problems during a research project and quickly solving these problems.

  • Experience with MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python and C. Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.

  • Familiarity with embedded programming of microcontrollers, wireless modules, etc.

  • Familiarity with the board assembly process: identify and acquire appropriate circuit components and connectors, solder surface-mount components, and bond-wire IC chips.

  • Ability to develop a wide range of R&D-support capabilities to become involved in multiple programs or aspects of the same program.

  • Ability to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Ability to instruct others in experimental techniques. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
