DESCRIPTION

The Department of Ophthalmology/Shiley Eye Institute at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is an internationally recognized center conducting basic, translational and clinical science research on eye disease. The Department of Ophthalmology currently receives over $7 million annually from federal funding programs of the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute and other sources making it one of the highest ranked departments in the United States based on the amount of federal research funding received.

The Data Manager will actively participate as a key member of the project team by designing, implementing, and documenting data management, data capture, data access, and data extraction needs of the project. The candidate is expected to utilize technical acumen in the planning, design, development, implementation and administration of data systems that collect, migrate (map and validate), store, integrate, summarize and display data from a variety of sources. The candidate will also make contributions to products including reports, presentations and publications as identified by the project team.

The Data Manager will work with the PI and project staff to develop methodologies for the analysis of research questions to be answered in papers, presentations, and funding proposals. Data Manager will prepare data for entry and analysis and perform data quality control and quality assurance procedures. Assist Principal Investigator with protocol design and development, concept sheets and abstracts. Data Manager will create graphic representation of data and data reporting. Conduct literature searches and extract information from published literature. Prepare research summaries and reports. Assist in grant proposal preparation and submission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of and direct experience with Health Services or dissemination and implementation research and related research methods.

  • Two (2+) more years of experience generating data reports and complex data algorithms to generate, abstract, manipulate and analyze complex data types.

  • Advanced theoretical and applied knowledge in advanced statistical techniques.

  • Proven ability to perform complex data mining, data extraction and manipulation to generate reports as requested by team members.

  • Demonstrated experience in making contributions to products of research projects including presentations, publications, reports, training manuals, and training curriculum.

  • Strong computer experience, proficiency with relational databases and a variety of statistical packages and data management platforms, and working knowledge of web-based data management.

  • Exceptional organizational, problem solving skills, analytical skills and long-range planning skills with attention to detail, ability to identify future contingencies, and ability to effectively prioritize workload and meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions and competing demands.

  • Mature and effective interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with appropriate demeanor to maintain good working relationships with Investigators and staff. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse faculty, staff on the phone, in person and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
