DESCRIPTION

The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the Executive Vice Chancellor for advancing teaching excellence and student success.

The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond: and, actively promote equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services.

Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to enhance their teaching (inside and outside the classroom, in traditional as well as in digital teaching and learning settings); support undergraduate and graduate students to advance their success at UC San Diego and beyond; support graduate students to develop their professional development as instructors; and actively promote equity and inclusion within its organization and through its programs and services.

The Academic Achievement Hub provides programming that serves as interactive, academic spaces designed to reinforce and extend student learning in physical and/or virtual environments. These environments offer a wide variety of comprehensive support services and programs to enhance student academic success, retention, and completion rates.

With general direction from the Academic Achievement Hub (AAH) Director, the Tutor Coordinator is responsible for the management of a comprehensive, campus-wide Triton Achievement Partners (TAP) Tutoring program, which offers strategic academic support for UC San Diego courses. The Tutor Coordinator provides oversight of group and one-on-one tutoring programs and may assist if needed with the Supplemental Instruction program as indicated by the AAH Director.

The incumbent will ensure consistency and success of an established program, and its alignment with the academic department, and university goals. They are expected to: exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying program rules and regulations, oversee on-boarding and supporting new tutor hires, provide mentoring, training, and supervision to tutors, implement marketing efforts, maintain budget records, assist with gathering and analysis of all data associated with program, and work collaboratively with, but not limited to, the AAH team, which includes the Director, SI Coordinators, and Administrative Assistant.

The Tutor Coordinator, along with the Director will work on and maintain program College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification of the Tutoring Program and engage in program assessment and strategic planning. The program will be built upon governing principles as established by leaders in the field, such as the Council for the Advancement of Students, National Association of Developmental Education (NADE), and National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA). The Coordinator in collaboration with the Director will build the program according to meet these governing principles per the above-stated areas.

This position requires close engagement with faculty, staff, college and department advisors, and departments to develop tutoring for high-need gateway and challenging in person and online courses as the university develops them. The Coordinator will engage in research and evidence-based assessment for the tutoring programming to compile reports and metrics that inform decision making.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least two years of experience working in peer education programs; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience in student learning support.

  • College-level tutoring and/or teaching experience. Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution. Demonstrated knowledge of academic curricula.

  • Knowledge of program development, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills. Experience conducting assessment and using data to inform decision making. Ability to track, compile, maintain and prepare statistical data.

  • Experienced knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural/linguistic issues in applying academic support to students. Values cultural, ethnic, gender, age, socioeconomic, and educational diversity, creating an environment of learning about, valuing, encouraging, and supporting individual differences.

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations. Recognizes the value of diversity and helps create a environment that supports and embraces diversity.

  • Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models. Experience creating and providing training opportunities.

  • Problem solving and organizational skills. Strong organizational skills including prioritizing, keeping track of information or work in progress, ensuring accuracy, multi-tasking, and handling interruptions appropriately.

  • Responds positively to changing business needs and responsibilities. Adapts approach and methods to achieve results; recovers quickly from setbacks and finds alternatives.

  • Multicultural competencies, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
