The UC San Diego Department of Bioengineering consists of ~25 ladder rank faculty, ~650 enrolled undergraduate students, ~170 graduate students, ~ 60 postdoctoral scholars, and ~120 staff positions. The department is consistently ranked as one of the top departments of Bioengineering in the world. It has a $6M annual allocation of State and University funds and holds a multi-million research portfolio (15.5 MIL in contract & grant expenditures), including awards (but not limited) from the NIH, NSF, other federal flow through, and gifts/private funding. The department of Bioengineering is one of six departments in the nationally ranked Jacobs School of Engineering. It enjoys close collaborations with the UC San Diego School of Medicine, the Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM), the Scripps Research Institute, the Sanford Burnham Institute and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

Applies professional programming concepts for small to medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. Resolves a variety of programming design and implementation issues. Works on programming assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

Incumbent will focus either on front-end or back-end development, depending on the incumbent's previous experience and interests. A front-end developer will build components of a web-based application using Angular, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. A back-end developer will build components of a relational database, web server, and RESTful APIs

Incumbent will work with a team to build a software platform consisting of: (1) a standardized public database for biochemical compounds and reactions, (2) an interface for collecting these compounds and reactions into genome-scale models of organisms, (3) a GitHub-style interface for sharing, versioning, and testing genome-scale models, and (4) visualizations of biological pathways using Escher (https://escher.github.io) for interactive model editing. This software platform will be used by academic groups around the world.

Level of the position (Applications Programmer 1 or 2) will be based on candidates' experience and qualifications.


  • Experience developing database-driven applications with SQL and Python or a similar language (back-end engineer)

  • Experience with deploying applications with cloud providers and/or local servers (back-end engineer)

  • Experience developing REST APIs (back-end engineer)

  • Up-to-date knowledge of TypeScript or JavaScript ES2015+ (front-end engineer)

  • Experience developing web applications with Angular or React (front-end engineer)

  • Experience writing high-quality, well-documented, well-tested code.

  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Python, SQLAlchemy, Flask, OpenAPI, Docker, TypeScript, Angular 4.x, Angular Material, GitHub, and Travis CI.

  • Knowledge of secure software development.

  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts.

  • Proficiency with git and GitHub.

  • Demonstrated software repository skills.

  • Experience with common programming tools.

  • Demonstrated the ability to follow software specifications.

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

  • BS degree in Computer Science or related field.

  • Experience with these would also be valuable: Docker, Agile development, GraphQL, D3.js, Redux, Reactive Extensions (RxJS), Jupyter

  • Experience with biology.
