Under general supervision, the Physician Assistant (PA) provides clinically expert service for Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery and Neurosurgery inpatient and outpatient practices at UC San Diego Health's La Jolla and Hillcrest campuses. This PA position is for UC San Diego Health’s Acoustic Neuroma program within Otolaryngology.

The Physician Assistant (PA) serves as liaison between patients and physicians, assessing and determining the acuity of patient symptoms and communicating these to the physicians as appropriate. Interviews patients regarding presenting problem to determine and expedite disposition. Assesses and provides Physician Assistant functions, as appropriate, for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Assists physicians as required; conveys instructions and lab results to patients, providing health education as needed; maintains and restocks equipment and supplies, including sterilization of instruments, disinfection and cleaning. Triages all incoming patient calls and electronic messages. Prioritizes and resolves, involving Physicians as appropriate. Manages and documents all communications in the electronic medical record system. The PA also functions as a provider of patient care for surgical specialties listed above. Provides full clinical support in the management of inpatients and outpatients. Plans, implements and evaluates health care treatments for surgery patients. Direct supervision will occur by assigned Attending Surgeons. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from pre- to peri- to post-op settings. Position requires special knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of surgery.


  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BART or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year recent working experience as a licensed Physician Assistant (PA).

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, and general medicine, including basics in pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.

  • Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient and outpatient plans of treatment.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.


  • Neurosurgery and/or otolaryngology experience.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

  • Skill to operate appropriate medical equipment, i.e., central venous pressure monitors, electrocardiography machines, cardiac defibrillator, transducer systems, digital read-out equipment, and medical computer systems.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Allied Health Privileges.

  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice.

  • May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday.
