UCSD Extended Studies and Public Programs ("Extension" or "ESPP") is a self-funded division of the University of California, San Diego. With an operating budget of approximately $50 million, the division provides continuing education to adults in a university setting. In addition to a wide variety of professional development and personal enrichment topics of study, Extension supports a television studio, a large English language program, a retired persons program, college preparation programs for high school students, a career resources center, and research relating to emerging industries and career opportunities. Participants and partners in Extension programs include individuals, corporations, government agencies, and other academic institutions.

The English Language Institute at Extension addresses language and culture proficiency. Participants are primarily pre-career individuals from around the world. Curriculum is traditional, but finely tuned to accommodate development at a personal level. Competition in this arena is fierce, so customer service and commitment to student success is essential.

Using skills as an experienced Student Services professional, provides the full range of student services within an academic department for international students. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Overtime may be required during peak enrollment times; no vacation/time away from work is approved during registration and peak periods, and that vacation of more than 1-2 days is not allowed during the summer due to heavy enrollments and staffing needs.

  • This position is at Extension's campus location (UNEX).


  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated success in working with international students in English language preparation programs and other pre-degree study programs with measurable outcomes.

  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Experience in providing academic counseling specific to international students with all ranges of English proficiency and knowledge of American academic culture and society.

  • Proven experience in designing/delivering workshops and written material to advise international students on U.S. academic culture and expectations and ways to assist them in being successful in their English language studies and academic/career preparation in the ELI.

  • Proven success working in a fast-paced customer service environment in post-secondary education where there is equal importance given to school/program policies and student satisfaction and progress.

  • Experience composing professional correspondence and other documents using excellent grammar and mechanics. Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.


  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • Must have a valid California driver's license to drive off-site to attend workshops.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
