DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, perform general laboratory administration and upkeep, domestic/international scientific instrument and supply shipping and receiving, and assist with day-to-day activities of the Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory. Serve as a general assistant to the Lagrangian Drifter Lab in conducting research, and other supporting lab activities.

Work duties include: Assist with metadata entry quality assurance and inventory tracking; Assist with organization of field campaigns; Assist with general lab maintenance, ensuring space is clean, safe and orderly; Order and organize supplies; Perform proper storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials; Keep informed of updates on safety policy and procedures and assist with ensuring Environmental Health and Safety compliance; Maintain inventory of laboratory equipment; Serve as point of contact for repair and maintenance of laboratory and computer equipment; Assist in the assembly, testing and operation of drifting buoy systems; Maintain detailed and accurate lab records and assist with lab visitors; Provide work-direction for junior staff and train new lab members in routine tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from a high school or GED and three (3) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in physical science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • The knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with scientific, technical, and administrative personnel.

  • Ability to maintain the organization of laboratory supplies, equipment tools, and documentation.

  • Ability to work in a research laboratory environment in adherence with established protocols.

  • Ability to develop, follow, and trouble-shoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from senior staff.

  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records with strict attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols for transportation of oceanographic research equipment to the port of call.

  • Solid problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Willingness to learn new skills. Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.

  • Ability to work in a team environment, excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with a diverse group of people, to communicate clearly/effectively, and to demonstrate tact and diplomacy.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to travel to various locations (local/national/international) for field-based work.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must have a valid passport for international travel.

  • Must have a valid California driver's license.

  • A background check is required.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials, such as Lithium Batteries.

  • May be required to work near curing epoxy and urethane.

  • Must be able to obtain certification to operate a Forklift.
