DESCRIPTION

The Department of Family Medicine and Public Health has approximately 100 salaried faculty and is comprised of seven divisions: Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Family Medicine, Health Policy, Global Health, Preventive Medicine, and Behavioral Health. Our mission is to improve Public Health through preventive, behavioral, epidemiologic and clinical research, education and clinical care. Our patient care is provided at several locations across the county as well as through multiple initiatives with the medically underserved in our community and includes training of over 60 residents and fellows. With over $125 million in research grants and contracts, our award-winning faculty conduct innovative Public Health research at the intersection of behavioral and medical sciences to assess and understand chronic disease etiology, improve human health, and prevent disease at the individual and population level.

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator and Program Manager, this position will coordinate recruitment and intervention on multiple human subjects’ research studies within the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health and Moores Cancer Center. S/he will oversee operational aspects of the studies in conjunction with project investigators and the research teams related to the development and delivery of physical activity and sedentary behavior interventions, primarily with older adults. The incumbent will oversee all aspects of the intervention including: development of intervention materials, recruitment of study sites and/or participants, recruitment, training and supervision of staff and interns, leading case management meetings, training and coordinating peer leaders and study counselors, planning/facilitating group sessions, evaluating the implementation of projects and other tasks related to the implementation of the intervention. The incumbent will interface with all research study sites and needs to create and sustain a positive environment that supports behavior change.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Health Promotion or a combination of education and experience working on Health Promotion research projects at the Master's level. Ability to make contributions to research projects at a conceptual level.

  • Demonstrated experience providing work direction and supervising staff with the ability to manage personnel, including developing job descriptions, interviewing and hiring candidates, setting achievable performance goals, regulating workload, providing performance evaluations, determining appropriate disciplinary actions as needed, and making effective compensation and classification recommendations.

  • Demonstrated experience delivering both individual and group behavioral and health counseling, specifically related to physical activity promotion and sedentary behavior reduction.

  • Demonstrated experience with physical activity and sedentary behavior change specific to older adult population. Must have knowledge of PA guidelines and demonstrated experience in promoting physical activities that are safe and appropriate for older adults. Must have demonstrated experience with use of behavior specific devices to aid self-monitoring.

  • Demonstrated experience with objective measurement of physical activity and sedentary behavior, including accelerometer, GPS, and ActivPAL devices, physical functioning assessments (SPPB, 400mwt) and standard cognitive functioning assessments, including Trails A/B and the Symbol Search.

  • Demonstrated experience training staff and interns in research activities.

  • Demonstrated experience leading case management meetings related to the delivery of a behavior change program.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge developing research study databases.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Must have reliable transportation and willingness to drive within San Diego County to conduct intervention activities at study sites.

  • TB clearance required.
