DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Staff Research Associate is responsible for all aspects of the lab, including but not limited to lab personnel, equipment, supplies, and documentation needed to maintain the daily operations of the lab. Oversee laboratory safety and ensure that the lab remains in compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. Keep careful records of laboratory inventory and lab personnel training. Train lab personnel in laboratory techniques and safety rules, providing oversight, development, and work direction to lower level researchers. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining the lab website, revising manuscripts and grant proposals, and ordering/restocking lab supplies. In addition, the incumbent will use knowledge, skills and experience with molecular cloning and protein purification techniques to work independently or in collaboration with researchers and provide support in research projects and will make contributions pertaining to research studies according to the goals of the research project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong theoretical knowledge in the area of molecular biology and biochemistry at a level of undergraduate degree in science or other demonstrated equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to research, design and implement original, effective strategies for coordinating and managing projects on a daily basis. Demonstrated experience in making significant contributions to research designs of various ongoing research projects.

  • Demonstrated experience in PCR, cloning, restriction digests, ligation, transformation and plasmid preps.

  • Demonstrated experience performing bacterial and yeast cell culture using sterile technique.

  • Demonstrated experience in protein purification techniques, including but not limited to ion exchange, size-exclusion, and affinity chromatography, FPLC, and gel electrophoresis.

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask efficiently, making significant contribution to ongoing research projects.

  • Knowledge and technical expertise in using Excel, Power Point, Word, and maintain websites using Contribute.

  • Excellent computer and data management skills. Proficient with database systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to foster good working relationships with a diverse group of people, using tact, diplomacy and flexibility to get the job done.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work in an environment with many interruptions, maintain good judgment and confidentiality working independently while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues.

  • Demonstrated skills and experience in writing and editing material for grants, reports, and peer-reviewed scholarly publications.

  • Experience with laboratory management duties and training research staff in a variety of research procedures.

  • Demonstrated skills in supervising staff and trainees providing work direction and maintaining an efficient research team.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
