The Center for Digital Learning (CDL) is part of the Teaching + Learning Commons (The Commons) at UC San Diego. The Center for Digital Learning, advances teaching and learning excellence and increases access to education on the campus and beyond using digital technologies. The Center's goals are to:

  • advance UC San Diego's vision to innovate and enrich education and promote digital technology to enhance learning
  • enhance the university's reputation locally, nationally and globally
  • provide support to faculty for online course delivery
  • leverage digital technology to increase access to UC San Diego's research and scholarship
  • contribute to research and assessment to advance knowledge in digital learning and inform new pedagogical approaches.

The Commons is a university-wide resource that supports and facilitates excellence in teaching and learning through integration, connection, and ongoing assessment of initiatives leading to an engaged and inclusive educational environment. The Commons is dedicated to the theory, practice, and scholarship of teaching and learning. Its mission is to advance learning by creating a campus-wide culture of engaged teaching and learning. The Commons is a systems-level network of interconnected centers and programs, which collectively advance learning and teaching at UC San Diego. Operationally, The Commons is part of the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and a direct outcome of UC San Diego’s Education Initiative and Strategic Plan.

The Commons is charged with promoting scholarly, evidence-based teaching practices and excellence in learning; gathering data for creating a baseline understanding of the current state of teaching and learning on campus, and develop assessment mechanisms for examining progress; supporting faculty, departments, and programs in determining the effectiveness of their teaching; and providing leadership and support for the university’s teaching and learning initiatives.

The Instructional Designer provides instructional and program design expertise for the design, development, and support of online courses and specialized educational programs. Responsible for assisting faculty in the design of online coursework/programs and instructional practices, development of learning resources and re-visioning of courses and course segments to online delivery methods.

This position works under the general supervision of the Director of the Center for Digital Learning (CDL), and plays an integral role in supporting the success of the University's online initiatives. Paramount to the success of this position are an in-depth understanding of instructional design theories and methodologies to online course design; an awareness of current trends in instructional software, multimedia applications and web-based educational technologies; an understanding of online course platforms (e.g. Coursera, edX); a currency in best practices in online course design; and excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Bachelor degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or closely related discipline with one year of higher education instructional design experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.

  • Thorough knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning. Demonstrated fluency using, and training users on platforms including Coursera and edX.

  • Demonstrated experience integrating online learning courses/certificate programs with one or more learning management systems.

  • Experience working with university faculty and staff on the development of a program with an academic focus.

  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong collaboration and negotiation skills. Strong demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and before large and small audiences.

  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
